Daniel Collins was born in 1807 in Thatcham, the son of Thomas and Sarah, nee Moules, Collins. Thomas, a widower, and Sarah had married at St Mary in Thatcham on 11 September 1794. Daniel was baptized on 25 October 1807 at St Mary in Thatcham.

 

 

 

Ann Wickins was born in 1804 in Thatcham, the daughter of Thomas and Rachel, nee Smith, Wickins. Thomas and Rachel had married at St Mary in Thatcham on 30 July 1804. Ann was baptized on 9 September 1804 at St Mary in Thatcham.

 

 

 

Daniel and Ann married on 14 February 1830 at St Mary in Thatcham.

 

 

 

A son Edward Collins was baptized on 13 February 1831 at St Mary in Thatcham. Sadly, he died aged only two and was buried at St Mary in Speenhamland on 3 February 1833.

 

 

 

Daniel and Ann had a daughter Matilda who was born on 11 November 1835. She was baptized on 13 December 1835 at West Shefford Primitive Methodist Chapel and Daniel was recorded as a baker. Another daughter Dorcas was born in 1838 in Newbury. Twins Rebecca and Thomas were born in 1840 and died as infants in the same year. 

 

 

 

In the 1841 census Daniel and Ann were living in Speen with daughters Matilda and Dorcas.

 

 

 

Ten years later in the 1851 census Daniel and Ann were recorded at the Wheat Sheaf Inn in Speen with daughters Matilda and Dorcas. Daniel was a publican and grocer, Matilda a dressmaker and Dorcas a scholar. Daniel and family lived in the Wheatsheaf Inn for a number of years as the Inn was put up for sale in August 1846 and March 1854 and on both occasions Daniel was named as the occupier and a yearly tenant.

 

 

 

In the 1861 census Daniel and Ann were living at The Crescent Inn in Speen with daughter Dorcas and Ann King aged two, a niece. Daniel was a retired grocer and Dorcas a milliner.

 

 

 

Ann died on 24 February 1866 aged 60 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 28 February.

 

 

 

A few years later in the 1871 census Daniel was living at 25 Smiths Crescent in Speen and was recorded as a gardener. Also living in the house was an unmarried domestic servant Sarah Barrett.

 

 

 

Daniel died on 6 December 1880 aged 73 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 December. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News of 16 December as below. There was also an announcement in the Reading Mercury of 18 December,

A few days after the funeral on 24 December at 33 Shaw Crescent there was a sale of Daniel’s household furniture and goods. Daniel left a will and probate was granted on 8 January 1881 at Oxford to Elijah Bew of Eastbury, a farmer and one of the executors. The value of the estate was under £400.

 

 

 

Later in the year on 20 September 1881 at Black Boys Hotel in Newbury an auction was held on instructions from the executors of Daniel’s estate. The first lot was 1 & 2 St John’s Villas, Newtown Road which were occupied for rents of £18 and £24 a year respectively. The second lot was six freehold houses in Prospect Place, off St John’s Road, producing an annual rent of £55 18s.
