Edward John was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Arthur and Mary Ann Moth (nee Sawyer) who were married in 1896 in Newbury.

Edward John died aged 13 moths in 1903, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd January 1904.

Edward’s family:

Edward’s father Arthur was born in Burghclere, Hampshire. He was baptised on the 26th March 1865, in Burghclere, the son of John and Harriet Moth (nee Belcher) who were married in 1854 (marriage registered in Newbury)

His mother Mary Ann was born in 1870 in Newbury. She was baptised on the 7th August 1870, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of Charles and Mary Sawyer (nee Head) who were married on the 18th November 1866, in Speenhamland, Newbury.

Arthur and Mary Ann also had the following three children:

Elsie Annie, born 28th January 1899

Frederick Charles, 1901

The 1901 census records Arthur (36) as a House Furnishing Porter and Club Caretaker, living at the Conservative Club, Newbury, with Mary Ann (31) and their daughters, Dorothy Mary (3) and Elsie Annie (2)

In 1911 Arthur (46), a Furnishing Porter, Mary Ann (42) and their children, Dorothy Mary (13), Elsie Annie (12) and Frederick Charles (9), were recorded living at 6 Coniston Terrace, St Mary’s Road, Newbury.

By 1921 Arthur (56) was a School Caretaker, at the School House, Station Road, Newbury, living with Mary Ann (52), Dorothy Mary (23), a self-employed Dressmaker, Elsie Annie (22), a Grocer’s Shop Assistant at World Stores, and Frederick Charles (19) Engineer (Turner) out of work

Arthur died aged 69 in 1934 in Newbury.

The 1939 Register records Mary living at 44 Melrose Ave, Reading, Berkshire, with her son-in-law Arthur W. Light and her daughter Elsie Annie Light.

Mary Ann died aged 81 in 1951 in Newbury.
