Charles John Moth

1856-1933

Charles John, his parents, siblings and early life:

Charles John was born 1856, in Newbury Berkshire. He was baptised on the 28^th December 1862 in Burghclere, Hampshire, the son of John and Harriet Moth, (nee Belcher) who were married in 1854 (marriage registered in Newbury)

His father John was born in Hoe Benham, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 3^rd February 1828, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Moth (nee Clark) who were married on the 4^th April 1825, at St Andrew, Boxford, Berkshire. John died aged 81 in 1908, at 1 Holly Bank Terrace, Kings Road Newbury, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1^st August.

His mother Harriet was baptised on the 20^th April 1834 in Burghclere, Hampshire, the daughter of William (a Labourer) and Mary Belcher (nee Brackston) who were married on the 18^th October 1833 in Burghclere. Harriet died aged 59 in 1893, in Greenham. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^th July.

John and Harriet also had the following children baptised in Burghclere:

The 1861 census records Harriet (27) living in Sheep Wash, Burghclere, Hampshire with her children, Edward (5), Charles (4), Frederick (2) and Sarah Ann (2 months)

In 1871 Charles (14) was recorded as a Farm Boy, working for a Farmer, William Plant (54), in Burghclere.

Charles in later life:

Charles married Mary Jane Perry in 1879 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Mary Jane was born 1858 in Collingbourne, Wiltshire. She was baptised on the 20^th June 1858, in Collingbourne Kingston, Wiltshire, the daughter of Alfred and Eliza Perry (nee Dance) who were married on the 20^th April 1851, in Collingbourne Kingston.)

Charles and Mary Jane had the following children:

Edith Mary, 1880 (died aged 18, on the 18^th March 1899, buried in the NRC on the 22^nd March)

Frederick Charles, c1882 (died aged 2 years 5 months in 1884, buried in the NRC on the 7^th June)

Charles John, 1898

In 1881, Charles (24), a Labourer, Mary (24) and their daughter Edith (7 months) were living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire.

The 1891 census records Charles (34) as a Brewer’s Labourer, living at 3 Coombe View, Enborne Road, Newbury, with Mary (34) and their children, Edith Mary (10), William (7), Arthur (5), Elizabeth (3) and George (1)

In 1901 Charles (44), a Brewer’s Labourer, Mary (43) and their children, William (17), a General Labourer, Arthur (15), a Butcher’s Errand Boy, Elizabeth (13), a Domestic Nursemaid, George (11) Henry (8) and Charles (2), were recorded living at 6 Sarum Cottages, Enborne Road, Newbury.

The 1911 census records Charles (54) as a Garden Labourer, living at 6 Sarum Cottages, with Mary (53) and their children, George (21), a Porter, Henry (17), a Chemist’s Porter and Charles (13).

Charles was widowed in 1920. Mary Jane died aged 63, on the 4^th November, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^th November.

The 1921 register records Charles aged 64 years 6 months, working as a Market Garden Labourer for Whitington & Son, Market Gardeners. He was still living in Sarum Cottages.

Charles died aged 76 on the 6^th April 1933, at 214 Newtown Road, Newbury. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10^th April.
