Alfred, his parents, siblings and early life:

Alfred was born c1842 in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of William and Sarah Allen (nee Jordan) who were married on the 23rd October 1820, at St Mary, Speen, Berkshire.

His father William was baptised in 1799, in Speen Berkshire, the son of Thomas (a Millwright) and Mary Allen. In 1815 William (16) was living in West Mills Newbury, with his father Thomas (46) a Millwright, his mother Mary (50) and his siblings, Charles (12), George (11), Charlotte (6) and Mary (3).

His mother Sarah was born on the 29th December 1799, she was baptised on the 7th February 1800, in Devizes, Wiltshire, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Jordan (nee Goodman) who were married on the 29th November 1791 at St John, Devizes (Sarah was from Bishops Cannings)

William and Sarah had the following children:

Eliza, baptised 18th January 1824, at St Nicolas, Newbury

George, baptised 16th July1826, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Mary Ann, baptised 22nd February 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Charles, born c1831

Henry, born c1835

Sarah born c1838

Emily born 1840

The 1841 census records William (40), a Millwright, Sarah (40) and their children, Eliza (15), George (14), Mary Ann (12), Charles (10), Henry (6), Sarah (3) and Emily (1), living in Northcroft Lane Newbury.

Alfred’s father William died aged 49 in 1848 and was buried on the 30th December at St Nicolas, Newbury

In 1851 Alfred (8) was living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with his widowed mother Sarah (51) and his siblings, Charles (19), a Miller, Henry (16), a Painter, Sarah (14) and Emily (11)

By 1861 Alfred (18), a Plumber and Glazier and his mother Sarah (61), a Fundholder, were living in Northbrook Street, Newbury

(Martha was born on the 29th July 1839, in Inkpen, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Sarah Hopkins (nee Jackson) who were married in 1836, in Inkpen)

Alfred and Martha had the following children:

Agnes Sarah, 1868 (died aged 9, on the 14th July 1877, buried in the NRC on the 15th July)

Elizabeth Gertrude, 1870

Emily Jordan, 1872

Charles Jackson, c1875

Edwin Hopkins, 1878

William Hopkins, 1881

The 1871 census records Alfred (29), a Painter, employing 1 man and 1 boy, living in West Street, Newbury, with Martha (30), Alfred H (4), Agnes S (3) and Elizabeth G (11 months).

The 1881 census records Alfred (39) as a Master Plumber, employing 2 men and 1 boy. He was still living in West Street, with Martha (41) and their children, Alfred (14), Elizabeth (10), Emily (8), Charles (6) and Edwin (2).

In 1891 Alfred (48), a Decorator, Martha (51), Elizabeth (20), Emily (18), both Dressmakers, Charles (16), a Decorator’s Apprentice, Edwin (14) and William (9) were again recorded living in West Street.

Martha died aged 59, on the 25th August 1898. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th August

Alfred remarried in 1900, his 2nd wife Charlotte Street

(Charlotte was baptised on the 13th September 1833, in Newtown, Hampshire, the daughter of William (a Publican) and Sarah Street)

In 1901 Alfred (58), a Plumber and Decorator and Charlotte (67), were recorded living in Chesterfield Road, Newbury.

The 1911 census records Alfred (68) as a Plumber and Decorator, living with Charlotte (77) and a servant, at “Springdale” Chesterfield Road, Newbury.

The 1921 census records Alfred (78) and Charlotte (87) living at 12 Chesterfield Road, Newbury. Alfred was recorded as a self-employed Decorator, at 1, West Street, Newbury.

Charlotte died aged 89 in 1923, in Newbury.

Alfred died aged 86 on the 19th April 1929. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd April, with his 1st wife Martha.
