Sarah was born on the 29th December 1799, she was baptised on the 7th February 1800, in Devizes, Wiltshire, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Jordan (nee Goodman) who were married on the 29th November 1791 at St John, Devizes (Sarah was from Bishops Cannings)

Sarah’s siblings were:

John, born 5th March 1797, baptised 10th March 1797

George Nelson, born 28th August 1798, baptised 17th October 1798

 

Sarah married William Allen on the 23rd October 1820, at St Mary, Speen, Berkshire.

(William was baptised on the 10th March 1799, in Speen Berkshire, the son of Thomas (a Millwright) and Mary Allen. In 1815 William (16) was living in West Mills Newbury, with his father Thomas (46) a Millwright, his mother Mary (50) and his siblings, Charles (12), George (11), Charlotte (6) and Mary (3)).

William and Sarah had the following children:

Eliza, baptised 18th January 1824, at St Nicolas, Newbury

George, baptised 16th July1826, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Mary Ann, baptised 22nd February 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Charles, born c1831

Henry, born c1835

Sarah, born c1838

Emily, born 1840

Alfred, 1842

The 1841 census records William (40), as a Millwright, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury with Sarah (40) and their children, Eliza (15), George (14), Mary Ann (12), Charles (10), Henry (6), Sarah (3) and Emily (1).

William died aged 49 in 1848 and was buried on the 30th December at St Nicolas, Newbury

The 1851 census records Sarah (51), Charles (19), a Miller, Henry (16), a Painer, Sarah (14), Emily (11), Alfred (8) and a lodger, Frederic Walker (21) a Painer, living in Northcroft Lane.

In 1861 Sarah (61) was recorded as a Fundholder, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Alfred (18), a Plumber and Glazier and a boarder, Eli Burgess (11).

The 1871 census records Sarah (71) living alone at 2 Kimber’s Almshouses Newbury.

The 1881 census also records Sarah (81) living alone at 2 Kimber’s Almshouses.

By 1891 her daughter Sarah (53) a Housekeeper, and Mary Ann Dearden (62), living on her own means, were living with Sarah (91), at 2 Kimber’s Almshouses.

Sarah died aged 93 on the 14th May 1893. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th May.

Her daughter Sarah died aged 79 on the 28th March 1917 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with her mother Sarah on the 31st March.
