Ann Allum

Ann, her parents, siblings and early life:

Ann was baptised on the 11^th November 1832 in South Tidworth, Hampshire, the daughter of James and Susannah Berry (nee Tarrant) who were married on the 19^th October 1832 in South Tidworth, Hampshire (James was from North Tidworth).

Ann’s father James was a Blacksmith. He was born c1807 in Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire. He died aged 71 in 1874 and was buried on the 2^nd December, at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire.

Her mother Susannah was baptised on the 23^rd August 1812 in South Tidworth, Wiltshire, the daughter of William & Hannah Tarrant. She died aged 69 in 1882 and was buried on the 21^st June, at St Mary, Thatcham.

Ann’s siblings were:

Jane, baptised 23^rd November 1834, in Ludgershall, Wiltshire.

James, baptised 6^th October 1839, in North Tidworth, Wiltshire (died aged 1, buried 22^nd May 1841, in North Tidworth)

Elizabeth, baptised 15^th May 1842, in North Tidworth

John, baptised 7^th December 1845, in Thatcham, Berkshire

Emma, baptised 30^th July 1848, in Thatcham (died aged 9 months, buried 25^th April 1849, at St Mary, Thatcham)

Levi George, baptised 30^th July 1848, in Thatcham

Louisa, baptised 21^st May 1854

In 1841 James (34), Susannah (28), Ann (8) and Jane (6) were living in the High Street, North Tidworth, Wiltshire.

By 1851 the family were living in Chapel Street, Thatcham, Berkshire.

The 1861 census records Ann (28) as a Domestic Cook, at Priory House, Thatcham (surname recorded as Bury on ancestry)

Ann in later life:

Ann married George Allum on the 18^th January 1862, at St Michael and All Angels, Enborne, Berkshire.

(George was baptised on the 20^th January 1833 in Wantage, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Rachel Allum (nee Hedges) who were married on the 25^th March 1827 in Wantage).

The 1871 census record George (37), a Brewer’s Labourer living in Speenhamland, Berkshire. Ann (39) was working as a Cook at Hungerford Park House, for a George Shippen Willes, a Magistrate.

In 1881 George (47), a Brewer’s Drayman and Ann (48) were living in Speenhamland. (Surname recorded as Allenn on ancestry)

The 1891 census records George (57) a Brewer’s Drayman, Ann (58) and their nephew, Sidney G. A. Reeves (11), living at 8 Hassell’s Buildings, Speenhamland, Berkshire.

They were still living at 8 Hassell’s Buildings in 1901 and George was still working as a Brewer’s Drayman. Their nieces Mary Reeves (42), Brenda Reeves (4) and their nephew Sidney Reeves (21) were also living with them.

The 1911 census records George (77) as a Brewer’s Labourer’s Pensioner and Ann (78), living at The Lamb Cottages, Enborne Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

They continued to live in Lamb Cottages until their deaths.

Ann died on the 31^st January 1917. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th February.

George died aged 87 on the 3^rd November 1920, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th November.
