Hannah Allen
c1835-1914
Hannah was baptised on the 7th June 1835 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Melicent Allen (nee Purdue) who were married on the 5th July 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury.
Hannah’s mother Mellicent was born 27th October 1802. She was baptised on the 3rd December 1802, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the daughter of James and Hannah Purdue (nee Skinner) who were married on the 5th July 1784, at St Nicolas, Newbury. Millescent/Millicent died aged 66 on the 23rd May 1869, in Greenham. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th May.
Hannah’s father George was a Miller. He was born on the 25th August 1804 in Newbury, Berkshire. George was baptised on the 16th September 1804, the son of Thomas and Mary Allen (nee Hazell) who were married on the 12th October 1797, at St Nicolas, Newbury. George died aged 66 in 1870, in Greenham. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd February.

The 1841 census records George (35), Milicent (35), Mary (10), William (7), Hannah (5), Charlotte (2) and Emma (1), living in Stroud Green, Newbury, Berkshire.
In 1851 Hannah (15) was recorded living with her parents George (47), Milicent (49) and her siblings, Charlotte (13), Emma (11), James (8) and Eliza (4), in Market Place, Newbury.
The 1861 census records Hannah (26), her parents George (58), Melicent (60) and her siblings William (29), Charlotte (24), Emma (22), James (19) and Eliza (15), living in Back Lane, Greenham, Berkshire.
The 1871 census records Hannah (35) as a Laundress, living in Ham Road, Greenham with her widowed brother William (38) a Carman and her sisters, Emma (31) a Laundress and Eliza (31), a Laundress.
In 1881 Hannah (45) and her sister Emma (41) were recorded living in Ham Lane, Greenham, both were recorded as Laundresses.
The 1891 census records Hannah (55) living alone in Greenham, she was still working as a Laundress.
By 1901 Hannah (65) was living in Malt Cottages, Kings Road, Newbury. She was recorded as a self-employed Laundress.
In March 1907 Hannah was allocated an Almshouse (6 Upper Raymonds Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury)
The 1911 census records Hannah (77), as Formerly a Laundress, living alone at 6 Upper Raymonds Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.
Hannah died aged 79 on the 26th May 1914. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th May. (She shares a grave with her older sister, Mary Ann Batson, buried 1873))
