George, his parents, siblings and early life:

George was a Miller. He was born on the 25th August 1804 in Newbury, Berkshire. George was baptised on the 16th September 1804, the son of Thomas and Mary Allen (nee Hazell) who were married on the 12th October 1797, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

George’s father was a Millwright. He was born c1770 in Berkshire. Thomas (70) was living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury in 1841 with his youngest daughter Mary (25). Thomas died aged 77 in 1847, he was buried on the 16th April, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

George’s mother Mary was born c1766. Mary died aged 66 in 1834, she was buried on the 17th January, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

George’s siblings were:

William, baptised in 1799 in Speen

Hannah, born 27th August, baptised 7th September 1800 at St Nicolas, Newbury. Died of a fever, she was buried 29th September 1801

Charles, born 17th October, baptised 31st October 1802              

Charlotte, born 18th August, baptised 27th August 1809

Mary, born 13th December 1811, baptised 12th January 1812

In 1815 George (11) was living in West Mills, Newbury with his father Thomas (46), his mother Mary (50) and his siblings, William (16), Charles (12), Charlotte (6) and Mary (3).

George in later life:

George married Melicent Purdue on the 5th July 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

(Mellicent was born 27th October 1802. She was baptised on the 3rd December 1802, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the daughter of James and Hannah Purdue (nee Skinner) who were married on the 5th July 1784, at St Nicolas, Newbury.)

George and Melicent had the following children (all baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury):

Mary Ann 17th January 1830

George, 20th November 1831

William, 6th January 1833

Hannah, 7th June 1835

Charlotte, 31st December 1837

Emma, 26th April 1840                     

and

James, born 1842, in Greenham

Eliza born 1846, in Greenham

The 1841 census records George (35), a Miller, Milicent (35), Mary (10), William (7), Hannah (5), Charlotte (2) and Emma (1), living in Stroud Green, Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1851 George (47) was recorded as a Corn Chandler, living in Market Place, Newbury, with Melicent (49), Hannah (15), Charlotte (13), Emma (11), James (8) and Eliza (4).

The 1861 census records George (58) as a Miller, living in Back Lane, Greenham, with Millicent (60), William (29), Hannah (26), Charlotte (24), Emma (22), James (19) and Eliza (15)

George was widowed in 1869. Millescent/Millicent died aged 66 on the 23rd May 1869, in Greenham. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th May.

George died aged 66 in 1870, in Greenham. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd February.
