Charles Samuels was born in 1841 in Newbury, the son of William and Hannah, nee Purdue, Samuels. He was baptized on 30 May 1841 at St Nicolas in Newbury.

In the 1841 census Charles was recorded with his parents William and Hannah and sisters Charlotte aged 7 and Caroline aged 2 in Newbury with William recorded as a tailor. Charles was still living with his parents in the 1851 census in Garlands Buildings in Newbury along with siblings Caroline aged 12, Thomas aged 7, William aged 6 and Sarah Ann aged 2. His father William was still a tailor.

Eliza Maria Parr was born in 1841 in Newbury, the daughter of George and Harriett, nee Curtis, Parr. She was baptized on 2 May 1841 at St Nicolas in Newbury.

In the 1841 census Eliza was recorded with her parents George and Harriett and sisters Hannah aged 15 and Harriett aged 3 at the Bull and Dog Inn in Newbury with George recorded as an inn keeper. Eliza’s father George died in December 1843 and he was buried on 26 December 1843 at St Mary in Greenham. Eliza was living with her mother Harriett in the 1851 census in Garlands Yard in Newbury along with sister Harriett aged 12, her mother Harriett was a school mistress and Eliza and her sister were both recorded as scholars.

Charles Samuels and Eliza Maria Parr married in Newbury in 1859.

Charles and Eliza had thirteen children, all born in Newbury who were Joseph Charles Henry (1860), Isabella (1862), Hannah Maria (1863), Rose (1866), Edith Ada (1867), Sarah Ann (1870), Fanny (1871), Edwin (1873), Alfred (1875), Thomas (1877), Thomas Arthur (1879), Florence Mary (1881) and Robert Brice (1883).

In the 1861 census Charles and Eliza were recorded living at St Mary’s Hill in Newbury along with son Joseph Charles Henry aged 10 months. Charles was recorded as a journeyman tailor and Eliza as a shoe binder.

Sadly, in October 1866 Ann Maria (she was recorded as Ann Maria rather than Hannah Maria both on the death certificate and burial record), daughter of Charles and Eliza, died aged 3 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 8 October.

Five years later in the 1871 census Charles and Eliza were living with children Joseph aged 10, Isabella aged 9, Rose aged 5, Edith aged 3 and Sarah Ann aged 1 at Bradley’s Yard in Newbury and Charles was recorded as a tailor.

Then seven years later in November 1878 Thomas, son of Charles and Eliza, died aged 14 months and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 November.

By the time of the 1881 census Charles and Eliza with children Edith aged 13, Sarah Ann aged 11, Fanny aged 9, Edwin aged 7, Alfred aged 5 and Thomas aged 1 were living at 6 Victoria Place in Newbury. Charles was recorded as a tailor and Eliza as a tailoress. Daughter Rose was living as a servant at West Fields in Newbury and employed as a general servant.

Two years later Rose, daughter of Charles and Eliza, died on 10 September 1883 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 14 September. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 15 September as below.

SAMUELS – On the 10th inst., at 6 New Market Street, Newbury, Rose, the third daughter of Charles and Eliza Samuels, in the 18th year of her age.

Sadly, six years later another daughter Edith Ada died on 24 June 1889 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 26 June. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 27 June 1889 as below.

SAMUELS – June 24, at 6 Market Place, Newbury, Edith Ada, daughter of Charles Samuels, aged 21.

Charles and Eliza were recorded at 6 Market Place in Newbury in the 1891 census along with children Edwin aged 17, Alfred aged 15, Thomas aged 11, Florence aged 9 and Robert aged 8. Charles was a tailor, Edwin a solicitor’s clerk and Alfred a printer’s apprentice. Daughter Sarah Ann was living as a servant at The Rectory, Michelmersh near Romsey in Hampshire, her occupation was house and parlour maid.

Charles and Eliza’s daughter Sarah Ann died on 20 December 1898 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 24 December. An announcement appeared in the Reading Standard dated 23 December 1898 as below.

SAMUELS – On the 20th inst., at 3 St Andrews Villas, Queens’ Road, Newbury, Sarah Ann Samuels, aged 28 years.  Her death cert. shows Pulmonary Phthisis (Tuberculosis) as cause of death.

Three years later in the 1901 census Charles and Eliza with children Fanny aged 29, Edwin aged 27, Thomas aged 21, Florence aged 19 and Robert aged 17 were living at 3 St Andrews Villas, Queens Road in Newbury. Charles was recorded as a tailor, Edwin and Thomas were both solicitor’s clerks, Florence a grocer’s assistant and Robert a brewery clerk.

Charles died just two months after the census on 2 June 1901 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 5 June. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 6 June as below.

SAMUELS – June 2, at 3 St Andrews Villas, Newbury, Charles Samuels, tailor, aged 60 years.

In the 1911 census Eliza was living at 7 Rosebery Place, Greenham Road in Newbury which had 5 rooms living along with a boarder William Davy, a retired farmer.

Eliza was recorded in the Upper Raymonds Almshouses in Newtown Road in Newbury in the 1921 census along with Rhoda Holloway 45 years old single and a domestic servant.

Eliza died in February 1928 at 214 Newtown Road (Newbury Union Workhouse) and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 23 February.

Charles and Eliza’s son Joseph was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 22 October 1898.

Charles and Eliza’s daughter Florence Mary married Thomas Augustin Thorn and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 January 1958.
