Edith was born in Shaw, Berkshire, the daughter of George (a Miller) and Eliza Bye (nee Stimpson) who were married on the 6th August 1848, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, Berkshire.

Edith’s mother Eliza Stimson was baptised in 1826, in West Ilsley, Berkshire, the daughter of John and Mary Stimpson (nee Fidler) who were married in 1820, in West Ilsley, Berkshire.

Her father George was baptised in 1822, in Rotherwick, Hampshire, the son of George and Pleasant Bye (nee Hathaway) who were married in 1818 in Rotherwick.

George and Eliza also had the following children:

Eliza, 1851,

George c1853 all four births registered in Burfield

Susan, 1855

Rosa, 1857

Clara, c1859 (died aged 6 in 1865, buried on the 8th November, at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington)

Martha, 1861

Ellen, 1865

Harry, 1867 (died aged 9 months, buried 28th April 1868, at St Mary the Virgin Shaw cum Donnington)

Albert, 1869               all eight births registered in Newbury

In 1851 George, Eliza and their daughters, Emma (1) and Mary (7 months) were recorded living in Burfield, Hampshire

The 1861 census records George (38), Eliza (35) and their children, Emma (11), Mary (10), Eliza (9), George (8), Susan (5), Rosa (3) and Clara (1), living in the village of Shaw, Berkshire.

The family were still living in Shaw village when the 1871 census was recorded.

Recorded as follows: George (48), a Miller, Eliza (43), Emma (21), an unemployed General Servant, George (18), a Miller, Susan (16), an unemployed General Servant, Rosa (13), Martha (12), Annie (8), Ellen (6) and Albert (2)

George died aged 50 in 1874. He was buried on the 3rd June at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington.

Eliza died aged 51 in 1879. She was buried on the 24th July at St Mary the Virgin Shaw cum Donnington.

The 1881 census records Edith, aged 7 as a scholar, at The New Orphan Houses, Ashley Down, Bristol, Gloucestershire.

Edith died aged 16, on the 6th May 1889 in the Newbury Workhouse, she had previously been living in Greenham, Berkshire. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th May.
