Julia, her parents siblings and early life:

Julia Caroline Braine was born on the 7th January 1848, in Hong Kong, China, the daughter of Charles Joseph and Eudora Braine (nee Marriott) who were married on the 8th May 1845, St Mary Magdalene, Taunton, Somerset.

Her father Charles Joseph Braine was a Merchant (Coffee& Tea). He was baptised on the 10th October 1814, at St John the Evangelist, Westminster, the son of John Smith and Mary Braine (nee Leaworthy) who were married on the 7th May 1805, at St Sidwell, Exeter Devon.

Her mother Eudora was born on the 9th May 1816, she was baptised on the 27th December 1826, at St Mary, Taunton, Somerset, the daughter of John William (a Printer) and Ann Marriott

Charles Joseph and Eudora also had the following children:

Eudora Mary Ann, baptised 18th March 1846 in Madras, India

Helen Mary, (aka Ellen) born c1849 in Hong Kong

Charles Frederick, born 1850 in Taunton, Somerset

Mary Isobel, born c1852 in Newton Abbot, Devon

Lucy Catherine, born 1853 in Newton Abbot, Devon

Arthur Belgrave, born 1854 in Newton Abbot, Devon

Twins: John and Percy Newlyn, born 1855 in Newton Abbot, Devon

Alice, born 1857 in Newton Abbot, Devon

In 1851 Julia (3), her mother Eudora (33) and her siblings, Eudora (5), Helen (1) and Charles (0) were visiting in (York Hotel) Sidmouth, Devon.

The 1861 census records Julia (13) living in Harrow, Middlesex, with her father Charles (46), a Retired Merchant, her mother (45), and her siblings. (surname recorded as Brain on ancestry)

In 1871 Julia (22), her father Charles (56), Manager of Ceylon Company Ltd, her mother Eudora (55) and her siblings, Eudora (24), Lucy (18), Arthur (16) and Alice (13) were living in Caterham, Surrey.

Julia’s mother died aged 55 in 1873 (death registered in the June quarter, in Godstone, Surrey)

The 1881 census records Julia (33), living at 35 Pembroke Road, Kensington, Middlesex, with her widowed father Charles (66), her sister Alice (23), her brother Arthur (26), her married sister Eudora (35), her brother-in-law Cornwallis Wade Browne (43) and a Cook and a Housemaid

He father Charles Joseph died aged 76 on the 22nd October 1890, he was buried at St John in the Wilderness Churchyard, Exmouth, Devon.

Julia in later life:

In 1891 Julia (43) was recorded as a visitor at 14 Park Villas, Greenwich, London

In 1901 Julia (53) was recorded as a Companion, at the home of Charles Casey (63) a Retired Surgeon and his family, in New Road Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.

Julia married in 1903

Groom: David Brodie, full age, widower, occupation, Doctor of Medicine, abode, 68 Hamilton Road, Highbury

Bride: Julia Caroline Braine, full age, spinster, abode, 2 Cyprus Road, Finchley

Fathers: Charles Joseph Braine, a Merchant and William Brodie, a Schoolmaster

Witnesses: William Godfrey Cooper and Helen Mary Cooper

(David was born on the 18th April 1821, he was baptised on the 11th May 1821 in Clackmannanshire, Scotland the son of William and Isabella Brodie (nee Plowman).  David had been married at least twice before he married Julia).

Julia was widowed in 1908, David died aged 87, on the 21st December. At the time of his death they were living at Slingsby Villa, Regents Park-road, Finchley, Middlesex.

The 1911 census records Julia (63) living on Private Means, at Royston, Summerland Avenue, Minehead, Somerset. Also recorded in the household was a visitor, Geraldine Scott (39) and a servant, Evelyn Davis (23).

In 1921 Julia was living in West Dawlish, Devon with an Alice Taylor (47)

By 1930 Julia and Alice were living at 24 Argyle Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

Julia died aged 89 on the 30th January 1937, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd February.
