EMMA DOLTON nee THOMAS Ref: 5477

Emma was born in Southampton in 1826 but nothing has been found as yet to confirm her parents, who might be William and Martha (nee Fry), and her early life.

In 1851, aged 15, she appears to be living with the Selley family in Portland Street, All Saint’s, Southampton who were Dressmakers.

She married Henry Dolton (Ref 4909) in 1849 in Newbury.

In 1851, they were living at St Mary’s Hill, Newbury with their 11-month-old daughter, Martha Naomi plus 2 servants. Henry was becoming a successful Corn Merchant.

From 1861 to Henry’s death they lived with their family in the Wharf area of Newbury and, finally, at Kendrick House. They had 6 more children: Annie; Charles Henry (who followed into the business); Rose Emma (Ref: 129) and Edith (Ref: 2503). Sadly, Frederick William (Ref: 8530) died aged 1 & Herbert George (Ref: 5152) died aged 4. They celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1899 just prior to Henry’s death. She supported him in his role of Alderman and with his Wesleyan Church duties.

Emma continued to live at Kendrick House with her two unmarried daughters, Rose Emma and Edith. She died there on 2 July 1901 and was buried on15 July 1901, aged 75.
