Joseph and his twin brother Emanuel were born in 1841 in Cumnor, Berkshire, the sons of John and Ann Barson (nee Lovegrove) who were married on the 18th October 1824 in Cumnor.

In 1851 Joseph (9) was living with his father John (49), a Gamekeeper, his mother Ann (46) and his siblings Sarah (19), Elizabeth (16), Mary (14), Thomas (12), Emanuel (9), Ann (7), John (6), Emma (4) and Charles (2).

The 1861 census records Joseph (19) working as a Footman, at Streatley House, Streatley Village, Berkshire, for a Thomas H Stone, a Magistrate.

By 1865 Joseph was working as a Policeman, census record 1871-1891 all record him as a Policeman.

He married in 1865

(Leonora was born in Oxford the daughter of Joseph and Hannah Enston (nee Alder) who were married on the 20th October 1823, in Bletchingdon, Oxfordshire).

The 1871 census records Joseph (29) and Ellen (30) (Leonora), living at Scotland’s Ash Cottages, West Hagbourne, Berkshire.

In 1881 they were living in the village of Chilton, Berkshire.

Joseph’s twin brother Emanuel (a Police Sergeant) died aged 41 in 1882. He was found dead, while on duty, on the roadside near Challow Station, on the 15th September

Both the 1891 and 1901 census records record Joseph and Leonora living at 4 Montague Place, Newbury. Also recorded living with them was Leonora’s nephew, William Benjamin Bricknell (son of Leonora’s sister Lydia). In 1901 Joseph (59), was recorded working as a County Court Bailiff.

Joseph died aged 69 in 1910. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th July.

The 1911 census records Leonora (74), living at 4 Montague Place, with a lodger, Joseph Pounds (37), a Farm Labourer.

Electoral Registers 1918-1924 record her living at 4 New Church Almshouses, Newbury,

By 1925 Leonora was living at 60 Newtown Road, Newbury. She died aged 90 in 1927 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd December
