Sarah, her parents, siblings and early life:

Sarah Finch was born on the 3rd November 1805 in Newbury, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 2nd December 1805 at the Lower Meeting House Independent, Newbury, the daughter of Charles and Sarah Matilda Finch.

Charles and Sarah also had the following children:
Robert, born 11th June 1807, baptised 27th July 1807

Frederick, born 28th July 1808, baptised 4th October 1808

Catherine Tuckwell, born 31st January 1810, baptised 3rd April 1810

Robert Tuckwell, born 2nd July 1811, baptised 22nd August 1811

Elishua Mary, born 29th December 1812

Matilda, born 1st August 1817, baptised 10th November 1817

In 1815 Sarah (9) was living in Brunston’s Yard, on the west side of Market Street, Newbury, with her father Charles (36), a Cabinet Maker, her mother Sarah (40), her brothers, Frederick (6), Robert (4), her sister Elishua (2), Sarah King (60) and Joseph Hambrough Tuckwell (50)

Sarah in later life:

In 1832 Sarah had an illegitimate daughter, Emma, born in Smith’s Crescent, Speen, on the 4th February 1832, who was baptised (Baptist) on the 13th December 1832. (Father, John Alsop).

The 1851 census records Sarah (45) working as a Housemaid for a Sarah Townsend (71) a Clergyman’s widow, in Bartholomew, Newbury, Berkshire.

Groom: Charles Purdue, widower, Carpenter, abode, Newbury

Bride: Sarah Finch, spinster, full age, Servant, abode, Newbury

Fathers: James Purdue, a Shoemaker and Charles Finch, a Cabinet Maker

Witnesses: George Finch and Ann Nias Toms

 

In 1861 Sarah (55) was recorded living with her husband Charles (61), a Publican, at the Two Brewers, West Mills, Newbury.

She was widowed in 1867, Charles died aged 67 on the 29th January, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd February.

The 1871 census records Sarah (65) working as a Housekeeper, for a James Hiscock, a Corn Merchant and his wife Lucy, in Speenhamland, Berkshire. (Surname recorded as Pindar on ancestry)

In 1881 Sarah (75) was living in St Bartholomew’s Almshouses, Newbury.

The 1891 census records her aged 85, living in King John’s Almshouses Argyle Road, Newbury, with a servant, Kate Few aged 15. (Surnames recorded as Purdin and Fred on ancestry)

Sarah died aged 86 on the 15th January 1892. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th January.
