Edith, her parents, siblings and early life:

Edith Alice Louise Elliott was born on the 17th July 1868 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, the daughter of Thomas and Alice Smith Elliott (nee Ramage) who were married on the 22nd June 1867, in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

Her mother Alice Smith was baptised on the 15th August 1848 in Queensborough, Kent, the daughter of Thomas Manley and Louisa Elizabeth Ramage (nee Adams) who were married on the 30th March 1842 at St James, Westminster. Alice was widowed before 1881.

Possibly her father, not proved: Thomas Elliott, baptised on the 4th April 1839, in Nottingham, son of Thomas and Mary Elliott. 1861 census aged 22, born Beeston, Nottinghamshire, occupation, Assistant Paymaster in the Royal Navy, in Port Royal, Jamacia.

Edith’s siblings were:

Harry Manly Casely, born 1872, in Devon
Amy Constance Mary, born 1874, in Devon

In 1871 Edith (2) and her mother Alice (22) were recorded lodging in St Andrew’s Plymouth, Devon.

Fathers: Thomas Elliott, a Paymaster R.N. and James Barnard, a Farmer

Witnesses: Robert Forsyth Scott and Gertrude Ramage

(James was born c1851 in Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire, the son of James (a Farmer) and Anne Barnard (nee Curwain)

James and Edith had the following two children (both born in Brixton):

Ernest James, born 1888
Edith Lucy, born 1889

The 1901 census records James (58) as a School Master, living at 58 Josephine Ave. Lambeth with Edith (32), their children, Ernest (12), Edith (11) and two servants.

The 1911 census records Edith (42) living at 2 The Avenue, Christ Hospital, West Horsham, with James (60), Head Mathematical Master at Christ Hospital, their daughter Edith (21), a student and two servants.

The 1921 census records Edith (52) visiting her mother Alice (72) at Royal Naval Cottages, St John’s Road, Penge, Croydon, Surrey

Edith was widowed in 1927, James died aged 76 on the 30th April in Sussex, at the time of his death they were living at Beldhamland, Loxwood, Sussex. Probate, London 11th June, to Edith Alice Louise, Effects; £4013 

The 1939 Register records Edith living on Private Means, at Caxton House, 19 and 21, Mount Sion, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

Edith died aged 73 on the 23rd January 1942, in the Newbury District Hospital. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th January (Age at death on MI recorded as 74)
