Nathan, his parents and siblings:

Nathan was baptised on the 6th February 1814, in Diss, Norfolk, the son of John (a Gardener) and Elizabeth Bales (nee West) who were married in Diss on the 6th March 1804. (John’s surname was recorded as Bale, he was a minor (married with consent) and was from Beccles. Elizabeth was from Shelfhanger).

John and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised in Diss:

Timothy, born 9th July 1807, baptised 12th July 1807

Elizabeth, born 23rd February 1810, baptised 28th February 1810

John, born 6th January 1812, baptised 12th January 1812

Eleanor, baptised 10th January 1817

Marriage details:
Place: St Mary, Newington, Surrey

Date: 5th March 1840

Groom: Nathan Bales, full age, bachelor, occupation, Gardener, abode, 17, Ellis’s Square

Bride: Eliza Morris, full age, spinster, abode, 17 Elis’s Square

Fathers: John Bales, a Gardener and William Morris, Deceased

Witnesses: Robert West and Susan West

(Eliza was born on the 8th September 1817, she was baptised on the 5th October 1817 at All Saints Isleworth, the daughter of William (a Miller) and Elizabeth Morris).

 

Nathan and Eliza had the following children:
Elizabeth, born 25th June 1840, baptised 19th July 1840 in Isleworth

James John, born 1842 in Newbury

Jane, born c1845 in Newbury

Charles, born 1846 in Newbury

Sarah, born 1848 in Newbury

Emma, born 15th December 1851, baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury, 7th February 1852

Ellen, born c1857 in Newbury

The 1851 census records Nathan (37) (recorded as Mathan on ancestry) as a Gardener, employing 2 men, living in Wash Road, Newbury, with Eliza (32) and their children, Elizabeth (10), James (8), Jane (6), Charles (4) and Sarah (2).

Eliza died aged 42 in 1858. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th August.

The 1861 census records Nathan (47) as a Gardener, living in Back Lane, Newbury, with his children, James (18), Journeyman Blacksmith, Jane (16), Charles (14), Emma (8) and Ellen (4).

Nathan remarried in 1864 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury). His 2nd wife was Mary Gardiner.

(Mary was born c 1817 in Tetbury Gloucestershire. (Possibly the daughter of Samuel and Martha Gardiner (nee Cove) who were married on the 7th March 1814 in Tetbury)

The 1871 census records Nathan (57) as a Gardener, living with Mary (54), in King’s Arms Yard, Newbury.

Nathan died aged 62, on the 25th May 1875. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th May.

Mary died aged 58, on the 29th June 1875.  She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd July.

 

Probate: BALES Nathan    Effects: Under £200       24th July    Administration (with Will) of the effects of Nathan Bales late of Newbury in the County of Berks Gardener who died 25th May 1875 at Newbury was granted at Oxford to James Bales of Maidenhead in the said County Mediaeval Metal Worker and Stephen Knight of Newbury Tinman and Brazier the Executors of the Will of Mary Bales Widow the Relict the sole Executrix and Universal Legatee
