Caroline, her parents, siblings and early life:

Caroline Lovegrove was born in Newbury, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 4th September 1814 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of John and Maria Lovegrove (nee Whiting) of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, who were married at St Nicolas Church Newbury, on the 13th August 1811. (Maria has been recorded as Keziah on Hardwicke Marriage Index and Meria on FMP marriage records).

 John was a Carpenter. He was baptised on the 17th December 1788, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of John and Elizabeth Lovegrove (nee Pavey) who were married on the 12th October 1786, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Maria was born c1784 in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire.

 

John and Maria also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury:

Charles, born 8th September 1812, baptised 4th October 1812

Mary Ann, baptised 29th December 1816

Eliza, baptised 6th March 1819

Twins: Ellen and Maria baptised 7th December 1821

Eliza, baptised 4th July 1824

Sarah, baptised 10th June 1827

In 1815 John (26), Maria (30), Charles (3), Caroline (1) and a Susanna Allen (60), were recorded living in Atkins Yard, on the east side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Caroline in later life:

Caroline married in 1838.

Fathers: Joseph Purdue, a Farmer and John Lovegrove, a Carpenter

George and Caroline had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury. George was recorded as a Licensed Victuller on all the baptism records:


George Edwin, born 30th March 1844, baptised 31st March 1844

Twins:  Fred and Henry, born 15th December 1847. Fred was baptised 17th December 1847 (died aged 3 days) and Henry was baptised the 18th December 1847.

John, born 8th September 1849, baptised 28th October 1849

The 1841 census records George (25) as a Mealman, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Caroline (25)

In 1851 George (37) was recorded as a Publican** living in Bartholomew Street, with Caroline (36), their sons, George (7), Henry (3), John (1) and three servants. (** Bricklayer’s Arms)

Their son Henry died aged 7 on the 20th January 1855, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th January.

Caroline died aged 43 on the 6th October 1857. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th October (funeral service held at St Nicolas Church, Newbury)

George remarried on the 21st August 1858, at St Nicolas Church Newbury. His 2nd wife was Mary Ann Holley.

The 1861 census records George (49) as a Publican, living in Bartholomew Street, with Mary Ann (40), his sons George (17), a Gunmaker’s Apprentice, John (12), Mary Ann’s nephew George Holly (17), a Sailor and a servant.

George died on the 23rd June 1866. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th June (funeral service held at St Nicolas Church, Newbury) (aged at death recorded as 54 on the GRO)
