Arthur his parents, siblings, half-siblings and early life:

Athur was born on the 30th July 1870, in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Edmund and Eliza Purdue (nee Chappell) who were married in 1864.

His father Edmund was baptised on the 21st May 1823, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of George & Mary Purdue (nee Cook) who married on the 5th February 1823 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Edmund was a Carpenter. He married his 1st wife, Ann Everest (born c1812 Headley Surrey) in 1845.

Arthur’s half siblings were:

His dad was widowed in 1862 Ann died aged 50. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Cemetery on the 26th December.

Arthur’s mother Eliza was baptised on the 18th December 1831, in Berkley, Gloucestershire, the daughter of George, a Chaise Driver (driver of a two wheeled carriage called a chaise) and Elizabeth Chappell, of Newport.

In 1871 Arthur, aged 8 months, was living in Railway Terrace, Newbury, with his father Edmund (48), a Journeyman Carpenter, his mother Eliza (39), his half-brother William George (24) a Bookbinders Finisher and his brothers, George (4) and Thomas (2).

In 1881 Arthur (10) was recorded as a Scholar at the Christ Hospital Hereford School for Boys and Girls

The 1891 census records Arthur (20) as a Printer, living in Railway Terrace, Newbury with his parents Edmund (68), Eliza (59) and his brothers Thomas (22), a Printer and John (15), a P.O. Telegraph Messenger. (Name recorded as Arther Purdin on ancestry)

His father Edmund died aged 77 on the 28th October 1900, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st November.

In 1901 Arthur (30) was recorded as a Machine Minder (Printer), he was still living in Railway Terrace, with his widowed mother Eliza (69) and his brother John (25) who was now working as a Postman. (Surname recorded as Parden on ancestry)

Witnesses: Jane Nisbett, Eliza Langford Sarah Nisbett, John Underwood, Harriet Underwood, Elizabeth Mary Purdue, George Purdue and June Nisbett.

(Henrietta was born on the18th October 1873 in Brixham, Devon, she was baptised on the 1st February at St Mary, Brixham, the daughter of George Broderick and Jane Nisbett (nee Jacobs) who were married in 1868 (marriage registered September quarter, at St George Hanover Square))

Arthur and Henrietta had a son, Ray George Nesbitt, born 24th June 1905 in Newbury.

 The 1911 census records Arthur (40) as a Printer’s Machinest (Letter Press), Henrietta (36) and their son Ray (5), living at 112 Gloucester Road, Newbury.

Arthur’s mother Eliza died aged 85 on the 18th December 1916. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd December.

The 1939 Register records Arthur as a Printer’s Machinest living at 112 Gloucester Road, with and Henrietta and her sister Eliza Nisbett.

Arthur died aged 73 on the 4th April 1944. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th April.

Henrietta died aged 93 in 1967. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st August.
