Ann Gosling was born on the 22nd July 1809, she was baptised on the 20th August 1809, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Hannah Gosling (nee Freeman) who were married on the 25th January 1807 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

William and Hannah also had the following children:

Charles, born 25th December 1811, baptised 4th January 1812, at St Nicolas Newbury
Elizabeth, baptised 30th June 1816, at St Nicolas Newbury

George, baptised 2nd May 1823, at St Nicolas Newbury

In 1815 Ann (6) was living in King’s Yard, on the east side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with her father Willian (40), a Tailor and her mother Hannah (35).

William and Hannah also had a daughter Elizabeth, baptised in 1816 and a son George, baptised in 1823 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

 

Ann married Thomas Purdue on the 28th May 1836 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

(Thomas was born on the 17th June 1809, he was baptised on the 21st June 1809 at St Nicolas, Newbury, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Purdue (Shilton) who were married on the 14th March 1792, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury).

Thomas and Ann had the following children:

Margaret Hannah baptised in 1837 in Greenham (died aged 21 in 1858, buried 20th March, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen)

Arthur baptised in 1839 in Greenham

Sarah Ann baptised 1841 in Greenham

Edward baptised 26th March 1843 at St Nicolas Newbury (dad a Cordwainer)

Elizabeth baptised 30th November 1845 at St Nicolas Newbury (dad a Labourer)

Harriet baptised 28th March 1847 (dad a Shoemaker)

Thomas baptised 25th May 1851 (dad a Labourer)

William baptised 30th January 1853 (dad a Labourer)

In 1841 Thomas (30), a Shoemaker, Ann (30) and their children, Caleb (12) (???possibly Ann’s son before she married Thomas), Margaret (4), Arthur (2) and Sarah (1 month) were living in Greenham Mills, Greenham, Berkshire.

The 1851 census records Thomas (41) as a Gardener/Labourer, living in Back Lane, Newbury, with Ann (41) and their children, Margaret (14), Arthur (11), Sarah Ann (9), Edward (8), Elizabeth (5) and Harriet (4).

Ann died aged 45 in 1855. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th April. (Funeral service held at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

Thomas died 50 in 1859, buried 29th May at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.
