Alfred Charles was born on the 23rd December 1876, he was baptised on the 12th September 1883 at St John the Evangelist, Smith Square, Westminster, the son of William Charles (a Horsekeeper) and Sarah Purdue (nee Lawrence/Laurence) of 8 Vauxhall Bridge Road. who were married in 1873 (see details below***).

Alfred’s family:

His father William was baptised in 1841 in Hampstead Norris, Berkshire, the son of William and Ann Purdue (nee Eyles) who were married on the 29th March 1929, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

He married Elizabeth Sarah Fell in 1870

Bride: Elizabeth Sarah Fell, full age, spinster, abode, 9 Lower North Street

Fathers: Wiliam Purdue, a Baker and George Robert Fell, a Tailor

Witnesses: Barnet Whitehead and Mary Ann Smith

William was widowed in 1871, Elizabeth died aged 24, in Chelsea.

Date: 23rd August 1873

Groom: William Charles Purdue, aged 30, widower, occupation, Coachman, abode, 3 Victoria Stables

Bride: Sarah Lawrence, aged 27, spinster, abode, 62 Regent Street, Westminster

Fathers: William Purdue, deceased, a Baker and Edward Lawrence, deceased, an Undertaker

Witnesses: Robert Tilbrook and Annie Kate Parsons

Alfred’s mother Sarah was born c1847.

William and Sarah also had the following children:

Elizabeth Ann, born 28th October 1879, baptised at the same time as Alfred Charles. Elizabeth Ann died aged 93 in 1973 in Camberwell.

Ada Elizabeth born 1874, (died aged 1 in 1876)

John, born 18th April 1884, baptised 23rd July 1884, at Holy Trinity, Vauxhall Bridge Road Westminster (dad recorded as a Driver of Post Cart, abode, 32 Ponsonby Place)

Sarah died aged 37 in 1884, soon after giving birth to her son John. (death registered in the June quarter, St George, Hanover Square)

William died aged 43 in 1884 (death registered in the September quarter, St. George, Hanover Square, name recorded as Charles William)

After his parents died Alfred moved to Newbury to live with his uncle.

He died aged 8 on the 25th April 1885 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th April.
