Martha was born in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of John and Sarah Darvill (nee Edmonds) who were married in 1818 in Princes Risborough.

John and Sarah also had the following children:

Caroline born 1820

Susanna born 1822

George born 1826

Benjamin born 1828

Ruth born 1833

Esther born 1839

The 1841 census records John (40) as a Farmer, living in Saunderton, Buckinghamshire, with Sarah (40), Caroline (20), George (14), Benjamin (11), Ruth (8), Esther (2) and Martha (7 months). (surname mistakenly recorded as Dwight on ancestry)

In 1851 Martha (10) was living at Church Farm, Saunderton, with her father John (53), a Farmer of 200 acres, employing 8 Labourers, her mother Sarah (52), her sisters Ruth (17), Esther (11) and a House Servant.

Martha died aged 15 on the 20th August 1856 in Newbury (death registered as Martha Darvell, in the September quarter). She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd August. (Also buried in the same grave were her nephew Herbert Darvill Purdue (buried 1871) and her niece Beatrice Darvill Purdue (buried 1874) the children of her married sister Ruth.

The 1861 census records John (63) as a Miller, employing 5 men and 1 boy, living in West Mills, Newbury, with Sarah (62), their daughter Esther (21) and a General Servant.

The 1871 census records John (73) as a retired Miller, living at 33 West Mills, Newbury, with Sarah (72) their widowed daughter Caroline Plater (51) (nee Darvill, formerly Hughes, later married Job Pearce) and a Domestic Servant. (Surname mistakenly recorded as Darwell on ancestry)

By 1874 John and Sarah had moved back to Buckinghamshire.

Sarah died aged 75 in 1874 and John died aged 82 on the 14th January 1881. (Both deaths recorded in Wycombe)
