George Rawlings

c1814-1876

According to census records George was born in Calne, Wiltshire. He was baptised on the 25^th December 1814, in Melksham, Wiltshire the son of Isaac (a Mason) and Susannah Rawlins.

George’s family:

His father Isaac was born on the 8^th December 1790, he was baptised on the 9^th January 1791 in Calne, the son of Isaac and Alice Rawlings. Isaac died aged 68 in 1859, in Calne.

His mother Susannah was born c1792, she died aged 47 in Calne.

Isaac Rawlings, bachelor of the parish of Calne, married Susannah Parsons, on the 7^th May 1812 in Melksham, Wiltshire.

Isaac and Susannah also had the following children, all baptised in Calne:

Henry, born 15^th May 1817, baptised 8^th June 1817

Theodosia, born 24^th October 1820, baptised 19^th November 1820

Isaac, born 13^th October 1822, baptised 3^rd November 1822

Susannah, born c1824, (no baptism found, died aged 1, buried 25^th march 1825 in Calne)

Alfred, baptised 18^th March 1827

Charles, baptised 9^th November 1828

Mary Ellen, baptised 17^th April 1831

Like his father Isaac, George was a Mason (stonemason). He married Sarah Wornham/Wernham on the 17^th June 1837 at St Mary, (The Minster) Reading, Berkshire. (Witnesses: Mary Ann Howe and Martha Harman)

George and Sarah had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire.

Francis baptised 17^th June 1838

Clara baptised 11^th October 1840

Edwin Thomas baptised 1842

Fanny baptised 27^th October 1844

Kate baptised 25^th April 1847

Harriett baptised 26^th August 1849

Frederick, born 29^th September 1850, baptised 20^th April 1851 (died in 1851, buried in the NRC on the 25^th April)

Isaac born 1853 (no baptism found, died soon after birth, buried in the NRC on the 28^th December)

Isaac baptised 30^th September 1855 (died 1856, buried in the NRC on the 1^st February)

The 1841 census records George (25), Sarah (30), Francis (3) and Clara (1), living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.

In 1851 George (36), Sarah (40), Francis (13), Clara (10), Edwin (8), Fanny (6), Kate (4) and Frederick (6 months), were recorded living at 10, Winchcombe Place, Newbury.

In 1861 George (46), Sarah (50), Clara (20), a Dressmaker and Fanny (17), were living at 23 West Street, Newbury.

In 1871 George (56), Sarah (60), their son Francis (33), a Mason and his wife Mary (28) were recorded living at 23 West Street.

George died aged 62, on the 2^nd November 1876, in West Street, Newbury. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7^th November.

The 1881 census records Sarah (73) living in West Street, with a lodger, Mary Giles (73).

Sarah died aged 82, on the 28^th November 1887. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30^th November
