Henry Bradley

c1794-1851

Henry was baptised on the 6^th April 1794 in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah Bradley (nee Wilmott) who were married on the 20^th August 1788, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire.

Thomas and Sarah also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

William, baptised 14^th June 1789 (died aged 57, buried 4^th February 1846, at St Nicolas Newbury)

Bartley, baptised 22^nd May 1791

Thomas, born 13^th June 1795, baptised 16^th August 1795 (died aged 3, buried 22^nd February 1798, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Joseph, born 29^th September 1797, baptised 5^th November 1797 (died aged 30, buried 26^th September 1827, at St Nicolas Newbury)

In 1841 Henry (45) was recorded as a Dyer, living in St Mary Hill, Newbury, Berkshire, with Amey Bradley (60).

The following appeared in Reading Mercury, dated 24^th October 1846:

The following persons were sworn in as special constables for the ensuing year under the Municipal Act for the borough: Joseph Golding, Henry Newbery, James Frewin, Henry Bradley, William Morris, James Wyatt, Bernard Deane and Richard Brown. Before the constables left the room, the magistrates gave them instructions how they were to deal with parties who should be guilty of letting off fireworks within the borough, particularly on the 5^th Nov. next, as they were determined to punish everyone so offending, with the utmost rigour of the law.

Henry was sworn in again as a special constable in 1847 and 1848.

He was appointed goaler of the Borough after the death of Thomas Samuels in 1849.

The 1851 census records Henry (58) as a Dyer, living with his wife Ann Bradley (70) in St Mary Hill, also recorded in the household was a niece, Charlotte Samuels (16). (He was still employed as the borough goaler at this time)

Henry died (age at death recorded as 55 on the GRO and 57 on the NBI) on the 2^nd May 1851, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7^th May.

In 1861 Amy Bradley (83) was living alone at 4 St Mary’s Almshouses, Cheap Street, Newbury. (mistakenly recorded as Fanny on ancestry). She died aged 83 in 1863 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7^th March.

DEATH OF THE BOROUGH GOALER

The Mayor reported the death of Henry Bradley, the Borough goaler, and it was arranged that the vacancy should be filled up at the next meeting.
