James Pottinger

1816-1864

James, his parents, siblings and early life:

James was born on the 28^th March 1816, he was baptised on the 5^th May 1816 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of William (a Millwright) and Rachel Pottinger (nee Mouldey) who were married on the 2^nd July 1810, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

(Also married on the same day and place was William’s widowed mother Susannah Russell. She married William Wright)

His father William was born c1793 and was a was a Millwright.

His mother Rachel was baptised in Speen, Berkshire, in 1792, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Mouldy. Rachel died aged 25 in 1818, she was buried on the 29^th June, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

William and Rachel also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

George, born 12^th December 1810, baptised 6^th January 1811

Susannah, born 4^th May 1812, baptised 31^st May 1812 (died of a fever, aged 7 months, buried 12^th December 1812, at St Nicolas, Newbury).

William, baptised 26^th June 1814

In 1815 William (22), a Millwright, Rachel (23) and their sons, George (4) and William (2), were living at James Kimbers, on the east side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

(Caroline was baptised on the 23^rd July 1823, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of William (a Labourer) and Mary Giles (formerly Jones, a widow) who were married on the 14^th September 1811, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury)

James and Caroline had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury (James recorded as a Labourer on all three baptisms):

Ann Maria, 27^th August 1854

Rachel, 23^rd April 1860 (died 1860 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15^th May.)

George, 26^th April 1863

The 1851 census records James (31) as a Boat Man, living in Lewis’s Buildings, Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Caroline (28) and a widower, George Marshall (42), a Shoemaker.

In 1861 James (40), a Labourer in a Flour Mill, Caroline (37) and their daughter Ann Maria (6), were still living in Lewis’s Buildings.

James Pottinger died aged 46 in 1864. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19^th March.

Caroline remarried in 1865

Bride and Groom made their mark

The 1871 census records Henry (47) as a Labourer, living at 19 Shaw’s Lane, Newbury, with Caroline (48), a Charwoman and her children, Ann (16) and George (8).

The 1881 census records Henry (49) as a Labourer, living in West Mills, Newbury, with Caroline (57).

In 1891 Henry (68) was again recorded as a Labourer, he was living at 4, Vine’s Buildings, Newbury, with Caroline (66), her son George Pottinger (27) a Labourer and a John Quall (26), both recorded as boarders.

Henry Townsend died aged 63 on the 22^nd November 1899, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25^th November.

The 1901 census records Caroline (78) living at 1, Vine’s Cottages, Kennet Road, Newbury. Her married daughter Ann(e) Dibley (43) and her son-in-law James Dibley (43) a bricklayer, were living with her. (surname recorded as Iownsend on ancestry)

Caroline Townsend died aged 79 on the 16^th April 1903, in the Newbury Workhouse, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20^th April
