Joseph Twitching was baptised on the 13th July 1796, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Richard and Ann Twitchen (nee Cumner) who were married on the 11th October 1778, at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Richard and Ann also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

John, 16th August 1779

Ann, 19th July 1781

William, 15th September 1783

Maria, 26th December 1785

Mary, 25th July 1788

Richard, 2nd December 1790

William, 5th April 1793

Eliza, (born 4th February 1799), baptised 27th February 1799

 

Joseph Twitchin married Elizabeth Street on the 16th April 1826, at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

(Elizabeth was baptised in 1798, in Compton, Berkshire, the daughter of Richard and Mary Street)

They had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury.

George, 8th April 1827 (died aged 6 months, buried 17th September 1827, at St Nicolas Newbury)

Joseph, 25th July 1828

George, 19th September 1830 (died aged 4, buried 7th November 1834, at St Nicolas Newbury)

Eliza, 17th June 1832

Richard William, 23rd October 1836

Mary Ann, 30th November 1838

Sophia, 10th October 1841

Joseph was a Bargeman. He does not appear to be recorded in either 1841 or 1851 census records

The 1841 census records Elizabeth Twitchins (40) as a Laundress, living in Hatchet Yard, Newbury with her children, Eliza (9), Richard (4) and Ann (2) (Mary Ann)

Their daughter Ann Twitchen (12) (Mary Ann) was recorded in the 1851 census, living alone in Cheap Street, Newbury. (recorded as daughter, parents on river in a barge).

Joseph Twitchin died aged 54 in 1851. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th May.

In 1861 Elizabeth Twitchin (63) was living in Church Almshouses, Newbury.

Elizabeth Twitchen died 1866 (age at death recorded as 77).  She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th March.
