James was born on the 26th September 1810, he was baptised on the 10th November 1810 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Walter (nee Challis) who were married on the 15th April 1796, at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

His father Benjamin was born c1776, he died aged 57 in 1833 and was buried on the 14th August at St Nicolas, Newbury.

His mother Elizabeth was born c1778, she died aged 42 in 1820 and was buried on the 17th March at St Nicolas, Newbury.

In 1815 James (5) was living in the City, Newbury, Berkshire, with his father Benjamin (40), a Sawyer, his mother Elizabeth (40) and his siblings, Benjamin (15), Rachel (13), Elizabeth (10), Ann (7) and Richard (2)

James married Jane Hall on the 23rd March 1834 at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire. (Both were from Greenham)

They had the following three children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:         

Jane baptised 19th June 1835 (James recorded as a Labourer) (Jane died aged 12, buried 12th September 1846, at St Nicolas Newbury)

Richard born c1837, baptised 30th June 1844 (James recorded as a Sawyer)

Sarah Ann born 1841, baptised 22nd July 1841 (James recorded as a Sawyer) (Sarah Ann died in 1841, buried on the 2nd September at St Nicolas, Newbury).

The 1841 census records James (25) as an Agricultural Labourer, living in the City, Newbury, with Jane (25) and their children, Jane (5) and Richard (4).

Jane died aged 33 in 1846, she was buried on the 25th November, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

The 1851 census records James (37) as a Sawyer, living in Bartholomews, City, Newbury. Also recorded in the household was a Housekeeper, Harriet Briant (32) and lodgers, Thomas Walter (30), a Bricklayer, Mary Walter (30) and their daughters, Ann Walter (4) and Eliza Walter (2). (Surname recorded as Watter on ancestry)

James died (age at death recorded as 39 on GRO and 40 on NBI) in 1851, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th June.
