Maria North

1810-1885

Maria was born on the 21^st April 1810, she was baptised on the 13^th May 1810 at St Mary, Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of James and Martha Wiggins (nee Bowles) who were married on the 23^rd August 1806, at St Mary, Greenham (James was a widower).

James and Martha also had the following children baptised at St Mary Greenham:

Mary Ann, born 11^th August 1807, baptised 6^th September 1807

William, born 31^st August 1808, baptised 8^th January 1809

Anna, born 13^th July 1812, baptised 29^th September 1812

Maria had an illegitimate son, George, who was baptised on the 18^th October 1829 in Greenham.

She married Samuel Tidbury on the 15^th September 1834 at St Mary, Shaw-cum-Donnington, Berkshire. Witnesses, William Bird and Martha Hopson.

Samuel died aged 30 the following year, he was buried on the 22^nd April 1835 at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Maria (28) remarried on the 10^th September 1837, in Thatcham, Berkshire. Her 2^nd husband was John White (33).

In 1841 John and Maria were recorded living in Bradley’s Yard, Newbury.

The 1851 census records John (48) as an Agricultural Labourer, living in Quaker’s Building Ground, Newbury, with Maria and their son George White (21), an Agricultural Labourer. (Maria’s illegitimate son George Wiggins)

John died on the 19^th November 1851, from injuries sustained after being thrown from a horse and cart on the 6^th November. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22^nd November 1851.

(Thomas North was a Plasterer, he was born on the 23^rd January 1800 in Newbury, the son of Thomas and Norah (Leonora) North. He married Hannah Dibley on the 15^th January 1823. They had 9 children. Hannah died in 1852)

The 1861 census records Maria (55) living in the Independent Chapel Yard, Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Thomas (61).

In 1871 Maria (61) and Thomas (70) were recorded living at 49 Northcroft Lane, Newbury.

The 1881 census records Maria (70) and Thomas (81) living at 8 New Church Almshouses, Newbury.

Maria died aged 74 on the 31^st January 1885, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4^th February.

Thomas died aged 89 on the 13^th May 1889, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17^th May.
