William was born on the 11th November 1812 in Chieveley, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 22nd November 1812 in Chieveley, the son of Richard (a Bricklayer) and Lucy Church (nee Fox) who were married on the 3rd November 1800 at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster.

Richard and Lucy also had the following children:

William married in 1838

(Sarah was born on the 25th October 1810 in Chieveley, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 23rd December 1810, in Chieveley, the daughter of William and Sarah Taylor (nee Taylor) who were married on the 28th May 1798 in Chieveley, Berkshire).

 

William and Sarah had the following children:

Alice Elizabeth 1844

Emily 1846

William 1850 (died aged 1 in 1851, buried in the NRC on the 7th June)

Rowland c1852

Walter 1854

Richard Brice 1857 (died 1857, buried in the NRC on the 18th December)

 

In 1841 William (25) a Bricklayer and Sarah (30) were living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.

The 1851, 1861 and 1871 census records record the family living at 9 Southampton Terrace, Newbury as follows:

1851: William (38), a Builder employing 8 men Sarah (40), Rosa Louisa (8), Alice Elizabeth (7), Emily (4) and William (1).

1861: William (48), a Builder employing 6 men, Sarah (50), Emily (14), Rowland (9) and Walter (6).

1871: William (58), a Builder, Sarah (60), Rosa (29) and Walter (16), an Apprentice Ironmonger.

Sarah died aged 60 on the 18th September 1871, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery 21st September.

William died aged 58 on the 23rd October 1871, he was laid to rest with Sarah in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th October.

 

Probate: 23rd January 1872     CHURCH William      Effects under £1500       The Will of William Church late of 9 Southampton-terrace Newbury in the County of Berks Builder who died 23rd October 1871 at 9 Southampton-terrace was proved at Oxford by Charles Charlwood of Padworth Mill in the said County Miller and John Bell of the Rectory Farm in the parish of Ufton in the said County Farmer and Executors.
