William Edward Griffiths

1802-1871

William was born on the 13^th December 1802, he was baptised (as William) on the 9^th January 1803 in Shaw-cum-Donnington, Berkshire, the son of Edward and Mary Griffiths (nee Wild) who were married on the 24th June 1799 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire.

William’s father Edward was born c1752, he died aged 85 in 1837 and was buried on the 7^th October, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

His mother Mary was born c1769, she died aged 69 in 1838 and was buried on the 15^th August, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

William was a Coachsmith. He married Mary Powers on the 17^th October 1824 at St Mary’s Church Thatcham, both were single, Mary was from Greenham.

(Mary Powers was born in Newbury on the 29^th January 1803 she was baptised on the 2^nd February 1803 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Powers (nee Dod) who were married on the 17^th March 1787 at St Mary the Virgin Speen Berkshire).

William and Mary had the following children (baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury):

Caleb born 1843 (died aged 80 in 1942 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22^nd February)

Jane born c1848 (no baptism found, died aged 5 in 1853 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30^th March)

Samuel William born 1850 (no baptism found)

In 1841 the family were recorded living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury. By 1851 they were living in Old Cattle Market, Newbury.

Mary died aged 53 on the 28^th December 1856, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2^nd January 1857.

William remarried in 1858. His 2^nd wife was Mary Ann Lipscomb(e)

(Mary Ann was baptised on the 6th April 1828 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the daughter of William and Mary Ann Lipscomb(e) nee Crumpton)

William and Mary Ann had the following three children: Frederick William c1859, Ann Matilda c1861 and Edwin 1862.

The 1871 census records William and his family still living in Old Cattle Market, Newbury.

William died aged 68 on the 22^nd November 1871, he was laid to rest (as William Edward Griffiths) in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25^th November.

Mary Ann Griffiths (nee Lipscomb(e)) died aged 68 on the 8^th February 1896, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11^th February.
