George Frederick Furley
1830-1885
George Frederick was born on the 2nd September 1830, he was baptised on the 31st October 1830 at St Mary, Islington, Middlesex, the son of Charles (a Coal Merchant) and Sarah Furley (nee Hermon) who were married on the 7th February 1825 at St Mary the Virgin, Walthamstow, Essex, both were single.
The 1841 census records George (12) living with his widowed mother Sarah (52), his brothers William (18), Charles (16), Henry (14) his sister Caroline (9) and a Sarah Hermon (22).
In 1851 George (22) was working as a Butcher. The census for this year records him as a visitor, at 4 Charlotte Street, Marylebone, Middlesex.
In 1856 George joined the Army (2nd Dragoon Guards).
The 1871 census records George (39) as a Private in the Cavalry Barracks in Colchester, Essex.
George was discharged, unfit for service, on the 28th August 1873.
He married the following year.

The 1881 census records George (47) as a Gas Works Stoker (+ a Chelsea Pensioner), living at 11, Quaker’s Burial Ground, Newbury, with Elizabeth (29) and their children, Henry (5), Caroline (4) and Elizabeth (1)
George died aged 52 on the 31st October 1885, her was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th November.
Elizabeth remarried in 1888. Her 2nd husband was Francis Fisher.
(Francis was born in 1862 in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Ashley and Elizabeth Fisher (nee Rowles) who were married in 1854 (marriage registered in Newbury)
They had two daughters born in Newbury, Frances Eliza born c1891 and Louisa born in 1892.
The 1891 census records Francis (28) as a Sawyer, living in Quaker’s Burial Ground with Elizabeth (39), their daughter Frances (under 3 months old) and Elizabeth’s daughter Caroline Furley (14), a Fancy Shop Assistant.
Francis Fisher died aged 34 on the 29th August 1897, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st September.
The 1901 census records Elizabeth (49), her son Henry Furley (25), a Joinery Works Labourer and her daughter Louisa (8), living at 3, Dothan Place, Newbury.
Elizabeth Fisher died aged 58, on the 20th February 1910, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th February. (Abode at time of death: 4 Bolton Place, Newbury)
