Marriette/ Marriott Appleford

1801-1889

Marriott was born on the 28^th April 1801, in Newbury, Berkshire, she was baptised (Presbyterian) on the 26^th August 1804, the daughter of Richard and Anne Appleford (nee Crofts) who were married on the 27^th February 1786, at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

The 1815 census of Newbury records the family living in Union Court, on the west side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, as follows: Richard (53), a Tailor, Ann (55) Ann (25), Arthur (17), Sarah (16) and Martha (11). Marriott does not appear in this census.

Marriott never married. In 1841 she was recorded aged 35, living in an Almshouse, in Newbury with her sister Ann (50)

The 1851 census records Marriett (49) (Marriott) and Ann (60), living at 7, Maderia Place, Newbury, both were record as Dressmakers.

In 1861 both were again recorded living at 7, Maderia Place, Ann (70) was recorded as a Fundholder and Marrietta (59) was recorded as a Dressmaker.

Ann died aged 74 on the 23^rd January 1865, she was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31^st January.

The 1871 and 1881 census records record Marriott as a Dressmaker, living at 7, Maderia Place, Newbury.

Marriette died aged 87 on the 5^th January 1889, she was laid to rest with Ann on the 11^th January.
