Lucy Appleford

c1777-1856

Lucy was baptised on the 12^th February 1777 in Bucklebury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Mary Tull (nee Purvey) who were married in Bucklebury in 1770.

Lucy married William Head on the 4^th January 1801, at St Mary, Bucklebury.

They had two daughters:

 Mary Ann, baptised 12^th April 1801, in Bucklebury

 Lucy, baptised 19^th June 1803, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

The 1815 census of Newbury records Lucy (38), William (42), Mary Ann (14) and Lucy (12), living in Cox’s Yard, on the east side of Northbrook Street, Newbury. (No occupation recorded for William)

William Head died on the 14^th July 1815, he was buried on the 18^th July at the Lower Meeting House, Independent, Newbury.

Lucy remarried on the 15^th May 1819, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. Her 2^nd husband was John Appleford.

(John was born in Newbury, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 22^nd January 1797, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Isaac and Mary Appleford (nee Willis) who were married on the 21^st July 1796, at St Nicolas, Newbury. In 1815 John was living in Cox’s Yard, a close neighbour of William and Lucy’s).

The 1841 census records John (45) as a Shoemaker, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury with Lucy (60).

In 1851 John (54) and Lucy (71) were recorded living in Balding’s Buildings, Newbury. John was again recorded as a Shoemaker.

John died aged 59 in 1856, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11^th January.

Lucy died aged 85 a few months later, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14^th April 1856.
