John was born in Newbury, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 22nd January 1797, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of Isaac and Mary Appleford (nee Willis) who were married on the 21st July 1796, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

The 1815 census of Newbury records John (18), living in Cox’s Yard, on the east side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with his father Isaac (40), a Sawyer, his mother Mary (48) and his brothers Joseph (11) and Obed (5).

John married Lucy Head (a widow), on the 15th May 1819, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

(Lucy was baptised on the 12th February 1777 in Bucklebury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Mary Tull. She married William Head on the 4th January 1801, at St Mary, Bucklebury. They had two daughters, Mary Ann, baptised 12th April 1801, in Bucklebury and Lucy, baptised 19th June 1803, at St Nicolas, Newbury. William Head died on the 14th July 1815. In 1815 Lucy, William and their two daughters were living in Cox’s Yard, close neighbours of John Appleford and his family).

The 1841 census records John (45) as a Shoemaker, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury with Lucy (60).

In 1851 John (54) and Lucy (71) were recorded living in Balding’s Buildings, Newbury. John was again recorded as a Shoemaker.

John died aged 59 in 1856, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th January.

Lucy died aged 85 a few months later, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th April 1856.
