Emily Caroline Seward (1896 – 1920)
Emily Caroline Hancock was born on 6 November 1896 in Newbury, the daughter of Walter Philip and Mary Jane, nee New, Hancock.
Sadly, Emily’s mother Mary Jane died on 7 September 1899 when Emily was aged only 2. Mary Jane was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 September.
In the 1901 census Emily was recorded living with her father and five siblings along with Walter’s sister-in-law Rosa Moss and her aunt Elizabeth New at Prospect Place in Newbury. Walter was recorded as a Prudential assurance agent. Walter remarried in 1902 to his sister-in- law Rosa.
Emily attended St John’s school in Newbury and then on 11 April 1904 she started attending St Nicolas Church of England School. The family by that time were living in Old Road in Newbury. She left the school on 8 September 1910 as she was ill and she would not recover before her 14th birthday (school leaving age at that time).
In the 1911 census Emily was recorded living with her father, step mother Rosa and six siblings at 6 Bourne Terrace in Wash Common. Walter was recorded as a watch repairer working at home, Emily did not have any occupation recorded.
Emily married Frederick Charles Edward Seward in Newbury in 1919. Frederick was born 10 March 1895 in Kingsclere, the son of George and Sarah Martha Seward.
In the following May Frederick and Emily were living at 4 Derby Cottages, Kings Road in Newbury. A son Frederick Philip Seward was born on 2 May 1920. Emily died the following day and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 5 May 1920.
Frederick remarried in 1921 to Cicely Kay Bishop. They continued to live in Newbury and Frederick died 17 June 1984 while living at 17 Ridgeway House, The Nightingales in Newbury.
Emily’s son Frederick Philip Seward joined the RAF volunteer reserve in WW2 and flew as a pilot in Bomber Command. He died on 29 June 1943 and is commemorated in the Heverlee War Cemetery in Belgium.
