Edith Ellen, her parents, siblings and early life:

Edith Ellen was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Alfred John and Maria Goodyear (nee Sheerman) who were married in 1865 (marriage registered in Newbury).

Her father Alfred John was baptised on the 14th February 1836, at St Giles, Wimborne, Dorset, the son of John (an Innkeeper) and Mary Goodyear (nee Gale) who were married on the 7th April 1831 at St George, Hanover Square, Westminster.

Her mother Maria was was baptised in 1845 in Burghclere, Hampshire, the daughter of Robert and Mary Sheerman (nee Ashley) who were married in 1840 (marriage registered in Kingsclere)

Alfred and Maria also had another daughter, Gertrude, who was born in 1865 in Hampshire.

The 1871 census records Alfred (34) as a Relieving Officer and Register of Births and Deaths, living at 39 West Fields, Newbury, Berkshire, with Maria (25), their daughters, Gertrude (5) and Edith Ellen (4) and Alfred’s widowed mother Mary Goodyear (63).

Alfred died aged 40 on the 1st February 1875, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th February.

Maria remarried in 1877, her 2nd husband was John Burton Turk.

The 1881 census records Edith Ellen (14), living at 57 Cheap Street, Newbury, with her stepfather John Turk (24), an Iron Founder and her mother Maria (33).

John Turk died aged 39 in 1896, he was laid to rests in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th November.

Maria died aged 77 in 1924, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with her husband John, on the 21st July.

The 1891 census records Edith (24) as a Companion, living at 55 Cheap Street, Newbury, with step-grandmother Lucy Turk (62).

Edith Ellen in later life:

Edith Ellen married William Joseph Gough O’Farrell in 1897 (marriage registered in Newbury)

 

(William was a seaman, he was born Joseph William Gough on the 29th May 1866 in Mount Town, Kingstown Dublin, Ireland, the son of Joseph Patrick (a Gas Inspector) and Sophia O’Farrell (nee Gough) who were married on the 18th June 1860 in Christ Church, St Marylebone, Middlesex)

Edith and William had the following two children, born in Newbury:
Eileen Gertrude, born in 1899

Brian William John, born 2nd November 1901

Edith was widowed in 1901 (before her son was born), William died on the 8th June at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales Australia.

The 1901 census records Edith (33) living at the Corner House, Gloucester Road, Newbury, with her daughter Eileen (1) and a servant.

Edith’s daughter Eileen Gertrude died aged 6 on the 22nd December 1905, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th December.

In 1911 Edith Ellen (42) and her son Brian (9) were recorded as visitors at the home of Alfred Camp (52), a Draper in Speen, Berkshire.

Edith Ellen died aged 68 on the 28th May 1935, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st May with her daughter Eileen Gertrude.

(Her son Brian married Gladys Irene Norton in 1935. In 1939 he was recorded as a Wayleave Officer, working for the Electricity Supply Company. He died aged 62 on the 14th August 1964 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st August, with his mother Edith Ellen and his sister Eileen Gertrude).
