Martha was born on the 16th February 1812 in Devizes, Wiltshire, she was baptised on the 25th October 1812 at New Baptist, Sheep Street, Devizes, the daughter of Stephen and Ann George (nee Long) who were married on the 24th November 1796, at St Mary, Devizes, Wiltshire.

Martha married George Vickers on the 8th April 1833 in Greenham, Berkshire.

(George was baptised on the 26th February 1815 in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of John and Hannah Vickers (nee Humphrey) who were married on the 17th September 1809 at St Mary, Thatcham)

George and Martha had the following children:

John baptised in 1837

George born c1839

Alfred born c1841

Charles born 1843

Henry born 1845 (died 1848)

Mary Ann baptised in 1848

William baptised in 1851

Harriet baptised in 1852

Amelia baptised in 1855

Joseph baptised in 1857

 

The 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records record the family living in Stroud Green, Greenham.

In 1841 George (25) was recorded as a Peat Cutter, living with his children, Hannah (8), Ann (6), John (4) and George (2). (Surname recorded as Vicars on ancestry). Martha doesn’t seem to be recorded in the census for this year.

The 1851 census records George (36) as an Agricultural Labourer, living with Martha (39) and their children Ann (16) John (13), George (11), Alfred (9), Charles (7), Mary Ann (2) and William (2 months)

In 1861 George (46) was recorded as a Gardener, living with Martha (49) and their children, John (23), a Bricklayer, Mary Ann (12), William (10), Hariet (8), Amelia (6) and Joseph (4).

The 1871 census records George as a Domestic Gardener, living in Golding’s Yard, Greenham with Martha (59) and their son Joseph (14).

George died aged 59 in 1874. He was buried on the 21st November at St Mary Greenham

 

In 1881 Martha (69) was working as a Sack Mender, she was living alone in Greenham Street, Greenham.

The 1891 census records Martha (79) living on her own means, in Blue Ball Yard, Greenham.

She was allocated a Church Almshouse in Newtown Road, Newbury in 1893.

Martha died aged 82 on the 20th May 1894, she was laid to rest in a consecrated private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th May.

Her granddaughter Edith Maud Vickers died aged 32 on the 25th February 1912, she was buried with Martha on the 2nd March 1912.
