Joseph, his parents, siblings and early life:

Joseph was born c1857 in Greenham, Berkshire, he was baptised in 1857 in Greenham, the son of George and Martha Vickers (nee George) who were married on the 8th April 1833 in Greenham.

Joseph’s father George was baptised in 1815 in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of John and Hannah Vickers (nee Humphrey) who were married on the 17th September 1809 at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire. George died aged 59 in 1874. He was buried on the 21st November at St Mary Greenham.

His mother Martha was born on the 16th February 1812 in Devizes, Wiltshire, she was baptised (Baptist) on the 25th October 1812 at New Baptist, Sheep Street, Devizes, the daughter of Stephen and Ann George (nee Long) who were married on the 24th November 1796, at St Mary, Devizes, Wiltshire. Martha died aged 82 on the 20th May 1894 and was laid to rest in a consecrated private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th May.

 

George and Martha also had the following children:

Henry born 1845 (died 1848)

Mary Ann baptised in 1848

William baptised in 1851

Harriet baptised in 1852

Amelia baptised in 1855

The 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records record the family living in Stroud Green, Greenham.

In 1861 George (46) was recorded as a Gardener, living with Martha (49) and their children, John (23), a Bricklayer, Mary Ann (12), William (10), Hariet (8), Amelia (6) and Joseph (4).

The 1871 census records George as a Domestic Gardener, living in Golding’s Yard, Greenham with Martha (59) and their son Joseph (14).

Joseph in later life:

Joseph Vickers married Sarah Ann Owen in 1876 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Sarah Ann Owens was born in 1855 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Hannah Owen (nee Flitter) who were married on the 30th September 1854 in Thatcham (Hannah’s surname mistakenly recorded as Frater)

Joseph and Sarah Ann had the following children:
Emily Louisa c1878 (died aged 4 in 1882, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd October)

Joseph 1879 (died aged 1 day, was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th March)

Edith Maud 1880 (died aged 32 in 1912, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd March, with her grandmother Martha Vickers who died in 1894)

Rose Amelia 1882 (died aged 84 in 1966, buried with her parents)

Martha c1885 (died aged 77 in 1962, buried with her parents, husband Albert John Giles and sister Rose Amelia Smith)

The 1881 census records Joseph (23) as a General Labourer, living in Greenham Street, Greenham, Berkshire with Sarah (24) and their daughters, Emily (3) and Edith (5 months).

In 1891 Joseph (34) was recorded as a Coal Heaver, living at 1, East End Cottages, Geenham, with Sarah (34), their daughters Edith (10), Minnie (8), Martha (6) and a lodger, Job Owen (24), a Carter. (Sarah’s brother)

The 1901 census records Joseph (45) as a Coal Porter Foreman, living at 3, York Road, Newbury with Sarah (45) and their daughters Edith (20), Rose (18) and Martha (16), all three girls were recorded as Laundresses.

The 1911 census records Joseph (55) as a Coal Porter, living at 57 York Road, Newbury with Sarah (56), Edith (30), Martha (25) and two young lodgers.

Joseph and Sarah continued to live at 57 York Road, Newbury until their deaths.

Sarah Ann died aged 73 on the 18th March 1929, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd March.

Joseph died aged 73 on the 13th May 1930, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the on the 17th May
