Henry Vickers

1850-1924

Henry was a Boiler Maker. He was born in 1850 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, the son of Thomas and Rebecca Vickers (nee Fanthorp(e), who were married on the 13^th April 1848 at All Saints Nettleham, Lincolnshire.

Henry’s father Thomas was an Agricultural Labourer. He was baptised on the 31^st March 1822 in Winceby, Lincolnshire, the son of William and Elizabeth Vickers (nee Andrew) who were married in 1820 in Nettleham, Lincolnshire. Thomas died aged 30 in 1852 (death registered in Louth)

His mother Rebecca was born c1825 in Nettleham, Lincolnshire, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Fanthorp (nee Cowling) who were married on the 3^rd September 1818 in Bishop Norton, Lincolnshire.  Rebecca remarried on the 7^th February 1856, at St Mary, Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire (as Rebecc Vicars). Her 2^nd husband was John Shaw, a widower.

In 1851 Henry (9 months) was living in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire with his father Thomas (29), his mother Rebecca (26) and his sister Elizabeth (2).

The 1861 census records Henry (10), (as Henry Shaw) living in the High Street, Lincoln with his step-father John Shaw (44), a Sailmaker, his mother Rebecca Shaw (34), his sister Elizabeth Shaw (Vickers) and his half-brother Fred Shaw (2)

(Mary Ann was born in 1857 in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Sarah Elizabeth Bailey (nee Hobbs) who were married on the 29^th April 1833, at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

Henry and Mary Ann had the following children:

Mary Elizabeth Rebecca born 1876 (died aged 4 years and 4 months in 1880, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4^th December)

In 1881 Henry (30) was recorded living at 9 Bedford Place, Newbury, Berkshire with Mary (23) and their daughters Margaret Ellen (2) and Annie Matilda (11 months).

The 1891 census records Henry (40), Mary (33) and their children, Margaret (12), Annie (10), Henry (6), Florence (5), Frederick (3) and William (1), living at 2, Falkland Terrace, Newbury

In 1901 Henry (50), Mary (43) and their children Margaret (22), a Florist’s Assistant, Annie (20), a Linen Wreath Worker, Henry (16), a Boiler Maker’s Apprentice, Florence (15), a Dressmaker’s Apprentice, Frederick (13), a Baker’s Apprentice, William (11), Dorothy (8) and Lilian (6) were living at “Crosscliffe” Andover Road, Newbury.

The 1911 census also records the family living at “Crosscliffe,” as follows: Henry (60), a General Labourer (Boiler Works), Mary Ann (54), Frederick Thomas (23), Planeing Machinist (Engineering Works), William Frank (21), a Boiler Rivetter (Boiler Works), Dorothy Louise (18), Dress Making, Lilian Mary (17) a Milliner and a granddaughter, Mabel Margaret Annie (5). (Daughter of their son Henry Charles and his wife Mabel Bessie (nee Humphries))

Henry and Mary Ann continued to live in Andover Road until their deaths.

Henry died suddenly, aged 74, on the 10^th December 1924, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13^th December.

Mary Ann died aged 69 on the 26^th June 1927, she was laid to rest with her husband on the 30^th June.
