Charles his parents, siblings and early life:

Charles was baptised on the 10th April 1822 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Ann Wheeler (nee Bird) who were married on the 20th October 1811 in Greenham, Berkshire.

Charles’ father was born c1787 in Berkshire, he died aged 57 in Newbury in 1845.

His mother Ann was born c1786 in Maidenhead, Berkshire. In 1851, after her husband’s death she was recorded as a Grocer, living alone in Marsh View, Ecchinswell, Hampshire. In 1861 she was recorded living with her married daughter Sarah Lucas (47) and her family at 2 Bartholomew Street, Newbury.  She died aged 76 on the 5th September 1862 and was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th September.

John and Ann also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Twins, Sarah and Ann (born in Greenham) and another daughter Jane, baptised 26th November 1815

Thomas, baptised 24th August 1817

Caroline Amelia, baptised 19th July 1820

Sylvia, baptised 8th December 1824

Arthur, baptised 3rd December 1826

Frances, baptised 18th January 1830

(Baptisms 1815-1817 record John as a Cheese Factor, baptisms 1820-1830 record him as a Shopkeeper)

In 1815 John (28), Ann (28) and their twin daughters Sarah and Ann aged 1 were living in John Hawkins Yard, Newbury.

The 1841 census records Charles (15) living in Northbrook Street Newbury with his father John Wheeler (50) a Grocer, his mother Ann (50) a Grocer and his siblings, Sarah (25), a Shop Woman Thomas (15) a Clerk, Caroline (15), Sylvia (15), Arthur (12) and Frances (9).

Bride: Elizabeth Giles, full age, spinster, abode, Newbury

Fathers: John Giles, a News Agent and John Wheeler a Carrier

Witnesses: Dennis Taylor, Sarah Hobbs, Elizabeth Chalke and Samuel George Hunt

(Elizabeth was baptised on the 13th November 1827 at St Laurence, Reading, Berkshire, the daughter of John (a Publican/Victualler, later a News Agent for the Reading Mercury) and Elizabeth Giles (nee Kemp) who were married on the 14th November 1822 in Shinfield, Berkshire).

Charles and Elizabeth had two daughters, Alice born in 1851, (died aged 6 on the 10th March 1856, buried in the NRC on the 19th March) and Kate born in 1853 and a son John Giles Wheeler born c1849.

The 1851 census records Charles Wheeler (27) as a Lawyer’s Clerk, living with his father-in-law, John Giles (53), his mother-in-law Elizabeth Giles (55), his wife Elizabeth (23) and their son John (2), in the Market Place, Newbury.

Charles later became the collector of the poor rates, property tax, rents &c.

He died aged 34, after a short illness, on the 14th March 1857. He was laid to rest in a family vault in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th March with his daughter Alice (buried 1856).

(His father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Elizabeth Giles and his daughter Alice Wheeler were also buried in the family vault. Alice was buried in 1856, John was also buried in 1867 and Elizabeth was buried in 1872)
