John William was baptised on the 9th August 1807 at St Mary, Newington, Southwark, Surrey, the son of John and Ann Randall. John and Ann also had a son, Joseph, baptized on the 10th March 1811 at St Mary Newington

John William was a Grocer and Provisions Merchant, trading at 91 Northbrook Street, Newbury, Berkshire. (Now (2023) Tui Holiday Store)

(Harriet was born on the 8th April 1809, she was baptised on the 27th November 1809 at St Andrew, Clifton, Gloucestershire, the daughter of Thomas and Sally Parsons (nee Porter) who were married on the 18th September 1806 at St George, Hanover Square London. Sally was from Marlborough Wiltshire)

The 1841 census records John (30), Harriet (30), their daughter Sarah (1) and Sally Parsons (65), in Northbrook Street, Newbury.

The 1851 census records John (44), Harriet (41), their children, Harriet Jane (6), John William (3), three Grocer’s Assistants, a Cook/Housemaid and a Nursemaid living in Northbrook Street.

In 1861 John (54), Harriet (51), their children, Sarah Elizabeth (21), Harriet Jane (16), William Harris (26), Alfred Judd (23), James Hill (18) (all Grocer’s Assistants), a Housemaid and a Cook, were recorded living at 91 Northbrook Street.

John was elected a member of the Town Council on the 1st May 1854 and served as Mayor for two consecutive years (1861-1863). He was also a trustee of the municipal charities and proctor of St. Bartholomew's Charity.

He died aged 56 on the 18th November 1863, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th November.

His widow Harriet (61), her son John William (24), a Grocer’s Assistant, her daughter Sarah Elizabeth (30) and two domestic servants were living in New Street, Newbury in 1871.

The 1881 census records Harriet (71), as an Annuitant, John William (33) (no occupation recorded) and Sarah Elizabeth (41), a Parish Worker, living in Craven Street, Newbury.

Harriet died aged 79 on the 30th September 1888, she was laid to rest with her husband John, on the 1st October.

Their daughter Sarah Elizabeth (buried 30th March 1917) and their son-in-law Alfred Judd (buried 13th February 1895) were also buried with them.
