Elizabeth Hobbs was baptised on the 9th August 1812 in Eling, Hampshire, the daughter of John and Betsy Hobbs (nee Wyatt) who were married in 1806 in Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire.

John and Betsy also had a son Edward, baptised 12th February 1809 and a daughter Ann Wyatt, baptised 15th February 1815 in Eling.

In 1841 Elizabeth was (26) was living with her father John (62), a Toll Gate Keeper, her sister Ann (24) and an Ellen Hobbs (4)

Elizabeth’s husband Francis:

Francis was baptised in 1796 in Speen Berkshire, the son of William and Mary Swindon

He had been married twice, before he married Elizabeth Hobbs in 1844. His 1st wife was also named Elizabeth Hobbs, they were married in 1834 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen and had the following three children:

Edwin, baptised on the 22nd August in 1834 at St Nicolas Church Newbury

Emily, baptised on the 26th October 1835 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (died aged 4 days, buried on the 30th October 1835 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Elizabeth, baptised on the 11th July 1837 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (died aged 1 day, buried on the 11th July 1837 at St Nicolas Newbury)

Elizabeth died aged 29, she was buried on the 1st September 1837 at St Nicolas Newbury

His 2nd wife was Charllotte Pickett, they married in 1842 in Speen, Berkshire.

Charlotte also died aged 29, she died in 1844 and was buried on the 14th May at St Mary the Virgin, Speen)

Francis and Elizabeth had the following children:

John Francis 1849 in Woodspeen, Berkshire

William 1851 in Woodspeen, Berkshire

Philip 1852 in Newbury, Berkshire

The 1851 census records Elizabeth (38) living in London Road, Speenhamland, Berkshire with her husband Francis (55), a Gardener, her stepson Edwin (16) and her sons John (1), William (1month) and a Nurse Ann Eles (79). (Surname recorded as Turnier on ancestry)

Elizabeth was widowed in 1854, Francis died aged 58, he was buried on the 5th May at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.

Elizabeth Swindon (40) was working as a Market Gardener in 1861, she was still living in London Road with her sons, John (11) and William (9).

The 1871 census records Elizabeth Swinden aged 52, as a Shopkeeper, living in Speenhamland (next door to the Fighting Cocks).

The 1881 census records Elizabeth Swinden (66) as a Green Grocer, living in Westcombe’s Buildings, Newbury. Her widowed sister Ann Osman (62,) an Embroideress, was also recorded in the household, as a visitor.

In 1891 Elizabeth Swindown (78) was recorded as a Green Grocer, living in Westcombe’s Buildings, Newbury, Berkshire

Elizabeth Swindon died aged 79 on the 19th January 1892, she was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th January
