Charles Swindon

c1850-1918

Charles was baptised on the 21^st April 1850 at St Mary the Virgin, Marlborough, Wiltshire, the son of Zebulon and Priscilla Swindon (Kemp) who were married on the 18^th December 1831 at St Mary the Virgin, Marlborough.

His father Zebulon was born c1804 in Marlborough, Wiltshire, he died aged 74 on the 5^th September 1881 and was buried on the 8^th September in 1881 in Wiltshire.

His mother Priscilla was baptised on the 8^th May 1811 at St Mary the Virgin, Marlborough, the daughter of Francis and Rachel Kemp. Priscilla died aged 92 on the 28^th May 1902, she was buried on the 1^st June 1902 in Wiltshire

The 1861 census records Zebulon (56) as a Stonemason (formerly an Ironmonger’s General Assistant), Priscilla (52), a Laundress, their children, Elizabeth (24), a Laundress, Thomas (22), a Groom, William (12), a Draper’s Errand Boy, Charles (10), a Gardener’s Errand Boy, Henry (8), their daughter-in-law Mary Ann (23), (nee Giles, wife of Thomas) a Sempstress and their grandchildren Ellen (2) and Sarah Jane (8 months), living in Herd Street, Marlborough.

In the 1871 census Charles (21) was recorded as a Painter, he was living in Herd Street with his father, a General Labourer, his mother, a Laundress and his sister, Mary Ann (26), a Laundress and his niece Ellen (12) (surname recorded as Saindon on ancestry).

Charles married Jane Peck in 1873 (marriage registered in Hungerford)

(Jane was baptised in 1849 in St George, Ogbourne, Wiltshire, the daughter of William and Jane Peck (nee Pett who were married in 1829 in Collingbourne Kingston))

Charles and Jane had the following children (all born in Newbury):

Evelyn May 1890

The 1881 census records Charles (30) as a Plumber, living in Shrewsbury Terrace, Newbury with Jane (30) and their children Charles (6), Gertrude (5) and Nellie (2).

Charles (41) was still working as a Plumber in 1891, the census for this year records him living at 3 Sarum Cottages, Enborne Road, Newbury, with Jane (41), Charles (16), a Grocer’s Assistant, Gerturde (15), Nellie (12), Evelyn (1) and a visitor, Charles Edward Dick (0). (Family surname recorded as Leomdon on ancestry)

Charles was widowed in 1900, Jane died aged 50, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^th March.

The 1901 census records Charles (51) as a House Painter, living at 3 Sarum Cottages, with his children, Gertrude (25), Nellie (22), a Dressmaker and Evelyn (11).

Charles remarried in 1902, his 2^nd wife was Tabitha Applegate (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Tabitha was born on the 1^st November 1867 in Kintbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Silvanus and Celia Applegate (nee Waters), who were married in 1864 (marriage registered in Hungerford)

Tabitha gave birth to a daughter, Minnie Alice in Newbury in 1904.

The 1911 census records Charles (61) as a House Painter, living at 3 Sarum Cottages, Enborne Road, Newbury, with Tabitha (43), their daughter Minnie (6) and a visitor, Arthur Fell (55).

Charles died aged 68 on the 4^th December 1918, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18^th December.

Tabitha died aged 76 in the Emergency Hospital, Newbury in 1944, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27^th April.
