William, his parents, siblings and early life:

William was born in Devon, he was baptised along with his brother Simon, who was born in 1812, on the 18th May 1817 at St Sidwell, Exeter, Devon, the sons of Simon (a Labourer) and Sarah Atkins.

By 1820 the family were living in Newbury, Berkshire.

Simon and Sarah had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire:

Sarah 2nd April 1820                  (dad, a Founder)

Joseph 26th May 1822 (buried in the NRC on the 20th Jan. 1900)               (dad a Labourer)

Ann 24th July 1825                     (dad an Iron Founder)

Mary Anne 18th May 1827       (dad a Foundry Man)

 

William’s mother Sarah died 43 in 1834, she was buried on the 5th May at St Nicolas Newbury.

His father Simon remarried on the 25th August 1834 at St Thomas the Apostle, Exeter, Devon. His 2nd wife was Ann Carter, a widow. Witnesses were Sarah Atkins and John Granger. Simon was recorded as a sojourner.

William in later life:

William was a Fellmonger.

He married in 1840

Bride: Mary Brown, spinster, occupation, Servant, abode, Newbury

Fathers: Simon Atkins, an Ironmonger and Daniel Brown, a Farmer.

Witnesses: George Stillman and Eliza Brown

(Mary was born c1802 in Ecchinswell, Hampshire, she was baptised in Kingsclere in 1802 the daughter of Daniel and Mary Brown.)

William and Mary were recorded living in Back Lane, Newbury in 1841, Greenham Mills, Greenham in 1851 and Northcroft Lane Newbury in 1861, 1871 and 1881.

Mary died aged 81 on the 13th February 1883, she was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th February.

William died 22nd April 1886, he was laid to rest with his wife Mary, in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th April.
