Mary Elliott Vockins

1885-1885

Mary’s birth and death were both recorded in the September quarter of 1885. She was the daughter of Joseph William and Sarah Vockins (nee Summers) who were married in 1876 (marriage registered in Newbury)

Mary’s family:

Her father Joseph was a Gardener. He was born in 1854 in Speen, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Mary Elliott Vockins (nee May) who were married on the 25^th December 1853 at St Margaret, Westminster, Middlesex.

Her mother Sarah born in 1844 in Chippenham, Wiltshire, she was baptised on the 14^th April at St Andrew Chippenham, the daughter of John (a Blacksmith) and Hannah Summers (nee Pearce) who were married on the 16^th October 1841 in Calne, Wiltshire.

Joseph and Sarah also had the following children:

In 1881 Joseph (28), Sarah (32) and their children Joseph W. (4) (recorded as William J), Gertrude B. (2) and Edward M. (1), were living in Old Newtown Road Newbury.

The 1901 census records Joseph (47) as a self-employed Market Gardener, living at 1 Russell Terrace, Newbury with Sarah (50) and their children William (23), a Solicitor’s Clerk, Gertrude (21), a Dressmaker, Bertha (18), a Dressmaker and Brice (11).

Joseph (57), Sarah (65) and their son Brice (21) were still living at 1 Russell Terrace, Russell Road, Newbury in 1911, Joseph was recorded as a Jobbing Gardener (own account) and Brice was recorded as a Brewery Clerk.

Joseph died aged 58 in 1912 in Newbury.

In 1921 Sarah was living in Devizes, Wiltshire with her daughter Bertha. She died aged 82 in 1926 in Devizes.
