Frederick Salter and family (1837 – 1907)
Frederick Salter was born circa 1837 in Newbury, the son of John and Mary, nee Dance, Salter. He was recorded with his parents and four siblings living in Cheap Street in Newbury in the 1841 census, his father John was an agricultural labourer. Ten years later in the 1851 census Frederick was still living with his parents and two brothers in Factory Yard off Cheap Street and his occupation was errand boy.
He married Eliza Randall in 1857 in Newbury. Eliza was born in 1838 in Newbury, the daughter of Sampson and Ann, nee Showell, Randall. Eliza was baptized on 15 April 1838 at St Nicolas in Newbury. She was recorded with her parents and seven siblings in the 1841 census living in Cheap Street in Newbury with Sampson a bricklayer. In the 1851 census Eliza was recorded with her mother and eight siblings in Factory Yard off Cheap Street.
Frederick and Eliza had 12 children all born in Newbury, Eliza Ann (1857), Priscilla (1859), Sophia (1860), Samuel (1862), Alice (1863), Alfred (1865), Clara (1867), Albert (1870), Henry (1871), Elizabeth (1872), Rose (1873) & Edwin (1875).
The eldest child Eliza Ann was born circa September 1857 and baptized at St Nicolas in Newbury on 6 December 1857. Sadly, Eliza died in November 1858 aged 14 months and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 December 1858.
In the 1861 census Frederick and Eliza along with daughters Priscilla aged 2 and Sophia aged 9 months were living in Quakers Building in Cheap Street in Newbury with Frederick a harness maker.
The eldest son Samuel was born a few months after the census in early 1862 and baptized at St Nicolas in Newbury on 4 July 1862. Samuel died in April 1863 aged one and was buried in Newtown Road Cemetery on 17 April 1863.
Later in 1863 a daughter Alice was born. She was baptized on 28 February 1864 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Alice died in September 1865 and was buried in Newtown Road Cemetery on 13 September 1865. Her age at burial was recorded as 1 year 6 months, although her actual age appears to be a few months older.
Another son Alfred was born circa August 1865. He died in May 1866 aged 9 months and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 17 May 1866.
Misfortune hit the family again on 12 June 1867 when the eldest surviving daughter Priscilla died aged 8. She was buried in Newtown Road Cemetery on 14 June. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 20 June 1867 as below.
SALTER - June 12, at Newbury, Priscilla Salter, aged eight.
In the 1871 census Frederick and Eliza along with children Sophia, Clara (although mistakenly recorded as Charles), Albert and Henry were living just off Mayors Lane in Newbury with Frederick a harness maker and Eliza a dressmaker.
Then just over eighteen months later in November 1872 Frederick and Eliza had a daughter Elizabeth. She died in December 1872 aged only 3 weeks and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 19 December.
Seven years later Eliza died on 31 March 1879 and was buried 4 April at Newtown Road Cemetery. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 3 April 1879 as below.
SALTER – on the 31st ult., at Wash Road, Newbury, Eliza, wife of Mr. F. Salter, aged 41.
Just six months later daughter Rose died on 15 October 1879 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 October. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 23 October 1879 as below.
SALTER – Oct.15, at Wash Road, Newbury, Rose daughter of Frederick Salter, aged 6 years.
In the 1881 census Frederick along with children Sophia, Clara, Albert, Henry and Edwin was living in Wash Road in Newbury. Frederick was a harness maker and Sophia was recorded as a housekeeper.
On 2 November 1883 Frederick appeared before the Newbury borough police court. He was summoned for not contributing towards the maintenance of his son Albert, who was sent to the Reformatory at Redhill. The magistrates made an order of 3s 6d per week.
Frederick remarried on 22 June 1884 at St John the Evangelist in Greenham to Mary Ann Hague. Mary was born circa 1842 in Kilnhurst near Rotherham the daughter of George and Emma. In the 1861 census she was living as a servant at Greasbrough, Rotherham and her occupation was general servant. Then in the 1871 census Mary was a cook and domestic servant living in Andover Road in Newbury.
In the 1891 census Frederick and Mary along with son Edwin aged 14 were living in Oak Cottage in Wash Road in Newbury with Frederick recorded as a saddler. Ten years later in the 1901 census Frederick, Mary and Edwin were still living in Oak Cottage with Frederick a harness maker and Edwin a general labourer.
Frederick died 2 March 1907 and was buried on 6 March at Newtown Road Cemetery. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 21 March 1907 as below.
SALTER – March 2, Frederick, the dearly loved husband of Mary Ann Salter, of Oak Cottage, Wash Road, Newbury, Berks aged 67.
He left a will and probate was granted on 22 February 1908 at Oxford to his daughter Sophia Gee (wife of Thomas Henry Gee). The value of the estate was £461.
Mary Ann died just eleven months later in February 1908 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 12 February.
Frederick’s parents were both buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, his father John Salter on 2 December 1867 and his mother Mary on 31 October 1874
