George Salter (1839 – 1914)

                                    Ann Salter (1827 – 1887)

George Salter was born circa 1839 in Greenham, the son of George and Ann, nee Brown, Salter. In the 1841 census George was recorded with his parents George and Ann along with sister Sarah aged 5 at Goldings Yard in Greenham.

Ten years later in the 1851 census George was still living with his parents George and Eliza Ann (it appears she had started using the name Eliza) at Goldings Yard along with brothers Henry aged 8 & James aged 1. George senior was recorded as a labourer and a pauper and Ann as a char woman.

George married Ann Ward in Q4 1866 in Newbury. Ann was born circa 1827 (her implied date of birth varied from census to census and her burial). Her birth place recorded in the 1871 and 1881 censuses was London, no more precise details have been found.

In the 1871 census George and Ann were recorded living in Speenhamland with Ann’s son Henry Ward aged 15 who was born in Newbury. George and Henry were both labourers.

George and Ann along with a lodger were living at 17 Cheap Street in Newbury in the 1881 census, George was recorded as a labourer.

Ann died on 11 April 1887 from cirrhosis of the liver in Pembroke Road in Newbury. The death was reported by George, who was recorded as a general labourer and was in attendance. Ann was buried on 14 April 1887 at Newtown Road Cemetery.

It appears George moved into Newbury Union Workhouse soon after Ann’s death as he was recorded in it in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses as a widower and general labourer.

George died February 1914 in the Workhouse Infirmary and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 12 February 1914.
