Mary Salter (1851 – 1919)

Mary Petherbridge was born in 1851 in Bishopsteignton in Devon, the daughter of Henry and Eliza, nee Hammond, Petherbridge. She was baptized on 20 May 1852 at St John the Baptist in Bishopsteignton.

In the 1861 census Mary was recorded with her parents and sister Rhoda aged 11 living in Plymouth with Henry a porter.

Henry died in September 1865 and he was buried at Ford Park Cemetery in Plymouth on 3 September 1865. The family moved to London after the death of Henry and in the 1871 census Mary was living as a servant at the Euston and Victoria Hotel, Drummond Street in St Pancras and her occupation was kitchen maid. Mary’s mother and sister Rhoda were living in Water Street in the City of London, with Eliza a dressmaker and Rhoda a domestic servant.

Mary married David William Martin in 1879 in Pancras. David was born circa 1845 in Plymouth.

David and Mary were living at 34 Wellington Street in St Pancras in the 1881 census with David a Royal Navy caulker and Mary a paper box maker. Ten years later in the 1891 census they were living at 91 Charrington Street in St Pancras with David now a carpenter.

David died on 13 May 1895 while living at 83 College Place in Camden. Administration of his estate was granted to Mary in London on 8 June, the value of the estate was £120.

No trace of Mary in the 1901 census. However, just after the census she married William Henry Taylor in Newbury. William was born circa 1829 in Woodspeen and was a widower.

William died on 25 June 1907 while living at Wentworth House in Stroud Green. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 29 June. William left a will and probate was granted at Oxford on 26 September 1907, the value of the estate was £1826 4s. Mary was left all his household goods, jewellery and other chattels plus the income from his estate, which was put in trust, for the rest of her life.

In the 1911 census Mary was living by herself at 2 Coombe View, Buckingham Road in Newbury and her occupation was recorded as private means. Just two months after the census Mary married Albert Salter on 12 June 1911 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Albert was recorded as a licensed victualler and a widower living at 67 Northbrook Street in Newbury. He was born in 1873 in Beenham.

Albert was recorded in the 1919 electoral register at 25 Friar Street in Reading. Mary died in March 1919 at 25 Friar Street and was buried in Newtown Road Cemetery on 14 March 1919.

Albert had moved back to 67 Northbrook in Newbury by the time of the 1921 census, there was also a housekeeper and 4 lodgers in the house. Albert was a licensed victualler. When the national register was compiled in September 1939 Albert was living in Berrymead Gardens in Ealing and he was a cook for an office canteen. He died on 27 November 1944 at Park Royal Hospital in Ealing.
