Francis Salter (1787 – 1863)

                                    Ann Salter (1787 – 1855)

Francis Salter was born circa 1787 in Newbury. He married Ann Shourey on 21 May 1816 at St Nicolas in Newbury and was recorded as a widower. At present details of Francis’s first marriage are not known. Ann was not recorded as a widow so was probably a spinster. She was born circa 1778 in Wanborough in Wiltshire according to the 1851 census.

Francis and Ann had four children all baptized at St Nicolas in Newbury, Elizabeth (1818), Mary Ann (1821), Caroline (1823) and Francis (1825). Francis was recorded as a tailor on the baptism of Elizabeth and as a labourer on the other baptisms.

Unfortunately, all the daughters died young and were buried at St Nicolas in Newbury. Elizabeth was buried on 1 November 1819 aged 13 months, Mary Ann on 11 June 1823 aged 23 months and Caroline on 13 July 1825 aged 2.

In the 1841 census Francis and Ann along with son Francis aged 15 were living in Northbrook Street in Newbury. Both Francis and his son were recorded as labourers.

Ten years later in the 1851 census Francis and Ann along with son Francis were living in Toomers Yard, off Northbrook Street in Newbury. Both Francis and his son were still labourer, while Ann was a laundress.

Ann died in March 1855 aged 68 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 March 1855.

In the 1861 census Francis along with a lodger Thomas Wilkins aged 55 were living at Harmers Yard, Winchcombe Place in Newbury and he was working as a labourer.

Francis died in January 1863 aged 76 and he was buried on 16 January at Newtown Road Cemetery.

Francis and Ann’s son Francis Salter was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 10 December 1870 aged 46.
