John Butler (1808 – 1874)

John was baptized on 9 October 1808 at All Saints, West Ilsley, the son of James and Ann Butler.

James was a farmer when John married.  

John married Catharine Hulcup on 20 May 1846 at St Paul in Oxford. John was recorded as a shoemaker and they were both living in Observatory Street in Oxford. Catharine was baptized on 27 August 1822 in Wantage, the daughter of John and Jane, John was a chaise driver at the time of the baptism.

In the 1851 census John and Catharine were recorded living in Newbury Street in Wantage with children George aged 5, Edward Charles aged 4, Matilda Caroline aged 2 and John James aged 2 months. John was a school teacher.

John and Catharine had another son Walter Roland in East Ilsley in 1853.

Catharine died in June 1855 aged 32 and was buried at St Mary in East Ilsley on 27 June 1855.

In the subsequent 1861 census John and children Matilda, John and Walter were all recorded in the Newbury Union Workhouse. John was recorded as an agricultural labourer, while the children were all recorded as scholars.

Ten years later in the 1871 census John and his son Walter were living in Fir Grove in Enborne and John was a brickmaker.

John died 20 November 1874 in the Newbury Union Workhouse. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 23 November 1874.

An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly news dated 26 November 1874 as below.

BUTLER – Nov. 20 at the Union Workhouse, Newbury, John Butler, aged 64.
