Charlotte Butler (1845 – 1907)

                                    John James Butler (1874 – 1874)

Charlotte was born in 1845 at Hoe Benham the daughter of James and Ann, nee Holder, Thorn. She was recorded with her parents and brothers Walter and Thomas at Hoe Benham in the 1851 census, James was an agricultural labourer. Ten years later in the 1861 census Charlotte was recorded living as a servant in Bath Road in Speen and her occupation was general servant.

She married John Butler on 28 September 1867 at the Congregational Chapel in Newbury. John was born in 1846 in Kingsclere.

At present no trace of John and Charlotte in the 1871 census.

John and Charlotte had a son John James in July 1874. Sadly, John James died aged on 3 September 1874 aged 8 weeks while the family were living at West Mills in Newbury. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 September. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 10 September as below.

JAMES (sic) – Sept. 3, at West Mills, Newbury, John James, infant son of John Butler, aged 8 weeks.

In the 1881 census John and Charlotte along with sons Edward aged 10, Henry aged 5 & James aged 1 were living at West Mills in Newbury with John a shoe maker.

Ten years later in the 1891 census John and Charlotte with children Edward aged 20, Henry aged 15, James aged 11, Annie aged 9 and William aged 6 were living at Mason’s Cottages, London Road in Speen with John a boot maker.

John and Charlotte along with children Henry, Annie and William were living at 7 Coniston Terrace in Newbury in the 1901 census with John still a bootmaker. Annie had no occupation recorded while William was an ironmonger’s assistant.

Edward, son of John and Charlotte, died on 4 November 1905 at 7 Park Street in Newbury and was buried at St Mary in Speenhamland on 9 November 1905.

Charlotte died 19 July 1907 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 22 July 1907. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 25 July 1907 as below.

BUTLER – July 19, at 7 Park Street, Newbury, Charlotte, the beloved wife of John Butler, aged 62 years.

John remarried in Q4 1908 in Newbury to Catherine Powers. John and Catherine were recorded living at 3 Stone Cottages, Marsh Road in Newbury in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. John died 2 March 1929 still living at 3 Stone Cottages and was buried 6 March 1929 at Shaw Cemetery.
